Had this sort of thing happen to me also; sort of. Did you check to see if the shredded paper level alarm has been triggered in the pull-out catch area? Sometimes it forms a pile that trips the alarm before the catch is full. Sounds simple, but check it out. Also check to make sure it's plugged in! I've done that several times, even to the point of calling for help! Did you know the technical help desk always asks if the machine is plugged in first!

thanks chuck just now found your note at 10am. I stayed up all night bent over, picking and prodding with very odd "tools" and finally have a working shredder! Not bad for an almost 90 year gal. and

Unplug it and look inside the shredding blades, especially around the spot usually near the center, where there is a pressure button. When paper hits it, it starts shredding. Chances are some pieces of paper have jammed just over it stopping paper from hitting it and switching it on. I have had to use long tweezers to work the jammed bits out... Once clear it will work again. Also using shredder oil every 50 sheets through will help it cut easier , and jam less frequently. Do not put too many sheets through together in a bunch. No staples...

The green power light is on but the motor does not run either when you insert a document or when you try to run it manually in either forward or reverse directions. It has stopped in the past due to...

Have you regularly oiled the machine.???
If you dont the shedded paper pieces and paper dust generated in the shredding process will start to clog-up the cutting teeth( oiling helps clean this out ! ) ...if you dont do this then the cutting machanism gets harder and harder for the motor to turn, the number of sheets that can be shredded goes down..the motor overheats and the thermal protection kicks in stopping you from using the machine until the motor cools down. In extreme cases if the machine is consistently run without being oiled and the machine is constantly being jammed you can blow the PCB inside the machine. When this happens obviosly the only remedy is to replace the PCB.

My shredder stopped working in the middle of a shred. I have cleaned all shredding from it, but it still refuses to run. Is there a thermo cut off switch, and if so, where?

  • Shut off the shredder. Unplug it and let in cool down for up to one hour. This will work if the shredder has stopped due to excessive use.

Check to see if the shredder is jammed. This is the most common cause of shredder problems. Click the power switch to reverse, which should clear a minor jam. If not, set the shredder to auto, and then to reverse again until the jam clears.

Clear extremely stubborn paper jams by grabbing the stuck paper and gently pulling it out. If smaller pieces of paper cause the jam, shut off the shredder and unplug it. When it cools down, carefully use a pair of tweezers to remove the paper bits.

  • 4

Determine if the power supply to the shredder is working properly. If the power supply is cold, use an alternative source of electricity for your shredder. If it is warm, there may be a problem with the shredder itself. Call your office machine repair shop or the shredder manufacturer for assistance.

Sharpen or oil the blades. Shredder blades need to be oiled on a regular basis to keep your machine in proper working order. Get oil made specifically for shredder blades from an office supply store.

    Gears keep jamming

Unless the gears are damaged the gears dont jam themselv's....this is a cross cut machine have you ever oiled it.??? Put some lightweight oil on a sheet of paper and run it thro' the machine; do this a couple of times to start...if you use the machine a lot then do this once per week at least and only run the machine at about 70% of its rated capacity...less strain on the motor and parts and the unit will last longer.

Overload with one sheet of paper..nothing jam inside .very clean

Should not have a problem with 1 sheet....so...have you ever "oiled" the machine.????? Pour some shredder oild inside to lubricate the cutting blades and try to run the machine in "reverse" for 20 secs or so...then put some oil onto a sheet of paper and try shredding the sheet of paper.

    ROYAL RL170MX Shredder won't shred

Did you ever put shredder oil onto the cutting blades?????
The blades can clog with paper dust and then it can't shred as many papges as it should or even jam completely...you should occasionally shred a sheet of paper with shredder oil poured onto the sheet.

Auto Shut off doesn't work anymore

Though I only work with Fellowes shredders this sounds like a paper feed sensor issue. If your unit has a mechanical paper feed sensor you can try to jiggle it in and out to see if any paper may have become jammed behind switch. If the unit has an electronic sensor it may simply need to be cleaned with a Qtip dipped in rubbing alchohol. Either of these should be located in the center of the paper throat.
If neither of these help your paper feed sensor or your pc1.gif board has gone bad and you will have to contact your manufacturer for further parts availability.
