Question about Sharp LC-45GD5U 45 in. LCD Television

4 Answers

I own a Sharp Aquos LC45GD5U, purchased January 2006 yesterday morning, the picture did not appear when I turned on the TV. Sound, backlighting working fine. Cable Box and DVD player also fine. No picture. Found in the manual a reference to a way to turn off the picture and get audio only, but it requires the original remote, which I have lost. (I use the remote provided by cable company, exclusively). I doubt that I have accidentally turned off the picture. However, I would note that the TV has been slow to turn on for the past couple of months. Has something burned out?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The easiest would be to 'borrow' an original remote to verify that it is not the video muting enabled. If even with the original remote, the situation remains the same then, two ways to address your problem:

  • if you are comfortable/familiar with electronic components & circuitry, then a DIY (do-it-yourself);
  • seek the service of a qualified professional and get a repair quote.
Based on the above, options then are:
  • access a Service Manual or at the very least a schematic diagram for reference when performing voltage checks at key test points;
  • follow the checklist/repair procedure to determine faulty boards;
  • check/replace as necessary; or
  • depending on the repair quote, you may want to re-evaluate your options and consider replacing the TV. This is based on the age, cost of repair, downtime and efforts to effect a repair. It may turn out not to be economically reasonable.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Most likely your set is experiencing a panel backlighting problem or powersupply problem.

    Try first unplugging the TV from main for ten minutes, th8is will drain power completely and restore default settings.

    After connecting test teh TV with no device connected, only with an antenna.

    If you still get no picture then this is an internal fault.

    If you get picture with antenna, then the TV is fine, and you have either a bad video cable or a faulty receiver/DVD.

    If the TV is defective call the number listed on the owner manual to get it repaired.

Sounds like you have bad capacitors somewhere in the TV. If none of them are bad, you could also have loose grounding screws on the inverter shield. It is common for this TV and simply retightning them will keep the backlight on again.

Green light is on but screen is black

It's either the backlight lamp or backlight inverter is busted due to a power failure or fluctuation. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Turn on the TV.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the backlight inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

No Picture with sound

sounds like you have a bad panel. This ussually happens when a backlight lamp has gone bad and the inverter board senses this and sends a signal to turn the backlight off.

If your TV is a SHARP LC-45GD5U,
Try using the reset buttons on the back of the TV. It should be below your digital audio output port.
If that doesn't work, ( this is only a guess) the power supply for the LCD screen may have burned out.

I doubt that your component has burned out. You may be looking at a repair issue here even though your unit is only 3 years old IF: you have tried connecting using different inputs, OR if you cannot bring up your sharp menu, or you list of inputs. If you cannot do those following things, you have a SERVICE issue on your hands and unless you purchased and extended warranty with sharp, its useless calling them. They will just tell you tough luck, and refer you to one of their authorized service centers. good luck
