Question about Gateway 816GM PC Desktop

3 Answers

We've had a Gateway 816GM desktop for about 3-years and except for the usual PC problems it's been fairly reliable. However, in the last few days it started locking up, no video, then it starting hanging and finally it will now not boot up at all. The HD light on the front doesn't even light up. A friend did a quick look at it and suggested the motherboard was gone. I'm assuming if the hard drive was bad the computer would at least boot up, but I don't even get the start up screen or any video. I've checked our monitor on my laptop and it's fine. If it is the m/b, what is best....a new m/b or a new desktop (hopefully not the latter)? Finally, assuming the hard drive is good and we replace the m/b, are all my files and pictures on the hard drive still saved? Bill in Florida

Bill,
If the hard drive is still good, your files are safe. Replacing the motherboard may mean you will need to reinstall the operating system so you will have to get the files off before you do that.

Now, even though it could be the motherboard, it could be any number of things. If I read your post correctly, nothing happens at all now? You push the power button and nothing? This to me sounds like the power supply. These go out quite frequently and a failing power supply can cause it to lock up. When the power supply fails completely, then you don't get anything. These are relatively inexpensive.

If a new power supply does not solve your issue, then start by removing all internal cards, floppy drives, cd drives, hard drives from the computer. Actually, you can do this first to make sure it still doesn't do anything before replacing the power supply. Then try and turn it on only with memory, cpu, cpu fan, and the onboard video (or video card if it doesn't have an onboard video port). If it does work, then you can add each item back one by one until you find the culprit. However, in my experience as a PC tech, this is almost always the power supply. Probably something like 95 % power supply, 4 % motherboard, and 1 % other. Good luck and if you need any further assistance, let me know. Also, I would appreciate it if you could give this solution a rating of fixya. Thanks! :c)

If the hard drive was bad the computerwon't boot at all, same if motherboard hard drive was faulty.

In your case the problem is not hard drive or motherboard, but a system problem.

You need to reinstall Windows with a setup cd or a recovery cd.

Well it sounds like there are 2 different issues one is the power supply and the other being the motherboard. When you try to boot do you hear any fans going? Also look on the mother board itself and some of them have a led light do you see one and is it lit?. And if you replace the motherboard your files will be just fine.

I cannot find drivers on the Gateway Support site, which usually means the machine is no longer supported, which also usually means the Operating System is no longer supported. If this machine is running XP, or earlier, beware. It is no longer supported, and hackers will be looking for these machines to infect. I recommend you get a newer machine, or don't try to get on the Internet with this one.

it is possible that one of the three are going out on the computer, motherboard, harddrive, power supply, only a computer tech could tell which one.

Have a 815 GM computer that when I push the power switch, the power light comes on only when I keep it pressed in, but the compter won't power up. It may be a power supply or a fuse problem? Does this...

It is a power supply problem. The only fuses are in the power supply. Do not open your power supply they can cause a shock. A new power supply is only about $20

I've got a gateway 816gm coputer and had a virus and downloaded a program to get rid of it, now I've lost something on my hard drive in the NTFS part.My desktop will not load internet explorer or some...

In your situation, please make a list of all your apps that you lost. For the internet explorer, if you have another pc you can get to the internet on, I recommend downloading IE7. Then you will need to go to add/remove programs, windows components tab, uninstall the version of IE that you have. Next take the copy of IE7 that you downloaded from MS, and install.
It will require some work to re-install all of your programs... I would advise you to contact Gateway and see if you can get a disk from them and re-install your OS, If the virus did that much damage you are better of to start with a fresh copy of windows.

My gateway 700 xl doesnt boot

Unplug the power from you 700xl and from you monitor. Try removing the cmos battery and reinstalling it. Then, plug everything back in and try restarting. If it continues to give you the yellow light, you may need to replace the CMOS battery, especially if it is more than two years old.

Another thing to consider is if your power supply is underpowered for the number of external devices you have plugged into it (i.e., cd, dvd, external hard drives, printers, pci cards, etc). Gateway installed very low powered power supplies in their 700xl desktop computers. Usually only around 250 watts maximum.

If you are replacing the power supply with another 250 watt maximum power supply, and you have a lot of external devices plugged in, you may need at least a 350 watt power supply....if your CMOS battery is not the problem.

Laptop Gateway mx8711

Gateway laptop is really ****.
I bought Gateway MX8711 in March 2007, after 6 months i use it...the hard disk failed.
Gateway replaced a new Hitachi hard disk for me but not more than 8 months and it failed again.
Gateway told me that i have no more warranty because the repair warranty is only 90 days.
I bought this laptop and use it not more than 2 years, the hard disk was failed twice.
Usually Hard disk manufacturer provided 3 years warranty for the hard disk. The manufacturer year of the hard disk is May 2007....they should able to help because the har disk not more than a year being used...but they don't. This is really bad customer service and not fair to the buyer.
I will not buy any Gateway products anymore....i swear.
