HP pavilion 515n runs real slow

It has 760 mb of ram - can I add more? Will this help it run faster or should I just a disc defrag?

You may consider follow:
1) you need to make sure your system slower than before the reason that should be excepted some windows system file damage or never clean disk fragile files and clean temp files
2) your PC max ram size is 1G (two sockets), now you have 256M+512M two ram sticks, so you can replace the 256M with 512M ram stick, you should make sure new ram should be same model as your original one.( your ram model is PC2100)
is this helpful or fixed your slower running?

Yes, you can add more - But if you have a fragmented HDD, it won't help much. Before you spend money on physical memory, I would do a disk defrag, check to make sure your HDD is not getting too full, and check your virtual memory. On xp you can get to this by right clicking MY COMPUTER, click properties, Performance, Paging file. XP has a problem during install of not setting this right. Change it to "system managed size", apply & ok, reboot your computer. If this doesn't help, and your HDD is not too full, stop some of the things that are loading up on startup.

Very slow on start up

Uninstall any unwanted software by using control panel, ADD/Remove Software. move any photos, mp3s etc to a CD or external drive.
install and run some anti spyware software like ADAWARE (free download) then
click my computer right click your C drive
left click properties click tools tab click defragment now click defragment button (and leave running for a few hours) this will place all your framented files which slow down disk read access into sequential (single part) files

finally to make a real difference add more memory (thats RAM not hard disk)

hope this helps Richard

2 GB (2 x 1 GB) PC2-4200 MB/sec,240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM

2 GB (2 x 1 GB)= 2-1 GB. modules for each slot, for a total of 2 GB.

Make sure that yor run the defragmenter:

How to use the Windows Defrag tool:

To start Windows Defrag, double click on the "My Computer" or "Computer" Icon on Desktop or in Start Menu.

When playing online games, my computer runs really slow, and at least once a week i get a pop-up stating that the virtual memory is low - how do I fix it?

The easiest way is to add more RAM memory. More RAM = faster computer.

Go to WWW.CRUCIAL.COM and run their SCAN MY COMPUTER option.

This will tell you excatly how much RAM you currently have installed in your system as well as how much room you have to add more if you want. It will tell you all the specs you will need to buy new RAM memory sticks and easily upgrade your computer's performance.

Good luck and please post back if this was helpful or if you need further assistance.

I have an HP Pavilion a335w computer. It's running a P4 2.5GHz processor (Northwood A80532) 512 L2 with a 100MHz FSB. It has a TriGem Glendale motherboard, PGA478 socket, and it's maxed at 1MB RAM. How...

I have a Compaq that came with this board and a celeron 1.8 or 2.0 I believe. The fastest P4 that will run is a Intel Northwood 2.8 Ghtz 400 FSB nothing ELSE! Northwood 2.8 is the fastest 400 FSB, the boards chipset won't run anything faster than 400 FSB. Mine is running, Win 7 the Northwood P4 2.8 with 2 gigs ram, 160 gig HD and a 256 video card for over 5 years (minus win 7, had XP before with no issues. Good for light gaming, web surfing and MS office! Add a Zotac 512 MB PCI or Sparkle Video card and you can handle most more medium gaiming out today!

Hi,

It makes no wonder that the machines slow with only having 384MB of RAM installed.

If you were to max out the memory capacity of the machine which i suspect is DDR SDRAM and probably has a maximum of 2GB as this would make the machine much faster that what it is now.

384MB of RAM is just not good enough to run XP properly these days.

If the machine is still in good working order (apart from it being slow) then you could upgrade the RAM.

Regards.

Slow start up....windows home edition of xp

I take it you mean that it started up faster before now?

Some things that can slow it down:
1) run scandisk
2) run defrag
3) run the command msconfig from the Start>run command
Remove unnecessary programs from the startup tab. This doesn't uninstall the programs, just tells them not to start. You may have spyware and adware running.
4) run a good malware detection program and scan for viruses.
5) Install more memory. In the beginning, many companies put 512 MB RAM in the XP machines. You need at least 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly and 2GB for best performance.

Want to increase the speed of my pc

Hello alanwemple,

Increasing the RAM is surely a good first step to speeding your computer up some. It was my impression that the a340n supports a total of 4GB, so you might want to recheck your manual. And 4GB would certainly be better than 2. As for the CPU, it's upgradeable on this machine, it uses a "Socket 478" chip. Simply remove the old one and insert a new one. But, the CPU is probably not contributing that much to your slowness problem.

Two things that I'd look at first, before I tackled the CPU is video performance and the hard drive. A faster video card with more video RAM can substantially speed things up. And, the hard drive may need some maintenance, starting with defrag. You may also want to do a disk cleanup and while you are at it, run a full virus check and malware detection program such as MacAfee or Norton to make absolutely sure that no bad stuff is slowing you down. And these are cheaper than replacing the CPU.

Hope this helps.

Comp running real slow and diskdefragment wont work

Hi Iharms,

I can help you with this but i need a bit more information first.

How long have you had this pc?

How many little icons can you see at the very bottom right of your screen? (on the blue bar near the clock, just a number would be OK)

How long has it been since you reformatted?

do you get any weird messages when you use the computer?

What virus protection do you use?

thanks in advance and i just want to mention that at the very least we will get your pc running alot faster.

My HP pavilion ze 4900 notebook became very very slow over night. It has 256 ram. will extra ram fix it? It runs hot. did the fan quit?

Do you have a program that removes spyware and adware. Also what operating system do you have? More ram will speed it up.An easy way to see how much you can install would be to go to crucial.com just to get an idea of what you can do with it.You need to defragment your drive also.If you have not defraged your pc,it will cause it to slow down also and even stop working altogether.I haved used spywaredoctor for the last 4 years and it has proven itself to me.Hope this helps.Goodluck.

How to upgrade a new compaq presario SR2150NX?

Add more RAM, 512MB ram will slow your computer down because when you run out of ram the computer uses the hard drive as vitrual ram. I have 4GB in my Vista machine and it is faster than XP.

Another suggestion is to turn off the hard drives indexing. Right click on your "C" drive and unhook the "index this drive for faster searching" box.
