Gateway DX4822-01 power switch problems

The power switch does not want to turn on the computer. The last time it was shut down I pressed it 20-30 times and eventually it started the computer. Inadvertently shut it down and now the power switch does not appear to want to turn on the computer. Motherboard is a Acer G643T motherboard and the connector on the motherboard has 6 wires, red/white to disk drive activity light and a white/blue and white/gray to the power switch

  • Anonymous Feb 19, 2013

I have the left side panel removed. That is normal side removed for access to the insides. I also removed the top plastic panel to have access to the power switch. Because it would come on before with similar behavior, it is likely the switch.

  • Anonymous Feb 19, 2013

However, the switch appears to be somewhat hard to remove. How do I remove that. I removed the DVD writer to have access. How do I remove the W/B and W/G wires from the switch pins. Can not get access to that yet, can only flex up the switch a bit. Are you instead talking about the pins on the connector attached to the motherboard. That connection does not appear to come of easily and I did not want to force. Or are you talking about the wires at the power switch itself. What two pins do you want me to connect.

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.

The area of contact pins on the motherboard, that the Main wires from the Front Panel go to, is the Front Panel header.

Main wires such as Power On LED, Power On switch, HarDDrive activity LED, and Reset switch; IF used.

Suggest KEEP track of where those wires go!

Make a drawing, and notes. I even use a magic marker, (Sharpee?), and make a notation of the Front Panel header pinout, on the floor of the computer case.

In this particular case it isn't known if the Power On switch is the problem, or the Power Supply.

Power On switch;
Power UNPLUGGED to computer, Anti-Static Precautions FOLLOWED; (Don't know? Post back in a Comment),

Remove the twisted pair of W/B and W/G wires, to the Power On switch pins, in the Front Panel header.

Plug power back into computer.
Use a small flat tipped screwdriver, and touch the two Power On switch pins. (Jewelers screwdriver works well for this application)

Power Supply comes on? Bad Power On switch.
Allow Windows to fully load, run for a few minutes; then turn the computer off normally.

Jump the two Power On switch pins again.
Power Supply comes on? You DEFINITELY have a bad Power On switch.

Power Supply does NOT come on?
We will go to a further diagnostic test then.
Awaiting results for first test, then we will go on.

Post back in a Comment.

To Add: Remove the case screw from the Rear of the Left Side Panel, (Looking at the computer from the Front) Slide the left Side Panel back, then come straight out.

My apologizes, I made an assumption. Based it on the fact you knew where the main wires plugged into the motherboard. Do I assume the main wires end in a plug connector, and said plug connector plugs onto contact pins of the motherboard? To regress; The front of your computer is the Front Panel. Those contact PINS on the motherboard, that the plug connector plugs onto, is the Front Panel header. Two pins in the Front Panel header, are briefly connected together by the Power On switch. (The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch)

You can see by looking at the plug connector, and the White/Blue-White/Gray wires, as to which 2 pins are for the Power On switch. What I would like you to do is briefly touch across those 2 pins, with a small flat tip screwdriver, (Jewelers screwdriver works good for this) The tip of the screwdriver touches THOSE two pins only. Contact period with screwdriver tip? No more than 2 seconds. This method bypasses the Power On switch. This way if the Power Supply comes on, you know the problem is the Power On switch.

Power Supply does NOT come on there is another simple test. If you still do not understand the above, that's OK. Post back in a Comment, and we'll work it out. Regards, joecoolvette

According to an Acer document, there are reset switch and power switch,

  • Anonymous Feb 21, 2013

    back row 9 7 5 3 1 and front row 10 (none) 8 6 4 2. According to the plug, it the white/gray and white/blue with the white/blue on pins 2

  • Anonymous Feb 21, 2013

4 and the white/gray on 6 8. This does not match the docs I have so I don't know which two are the power and which two are the reset.

  • joecoolvette
    joecoolvette Feb 21, 2013

Now I understand. No. The Reset switch is a reboot switch. Another way of stating is Restart switch. Not power on. Going on...........you're confusing me. The ONLY two pins you want are the Power On button (Switch) pins. I also see now that perhaps the color coding is different than I thought. Stating White/Gray means a wire with White insulation on it, and a gray stripe. Same thing with White/Blue. You are talking 4 different wires. I see where you're coming from now. It is my humble opinion that pins 6 and 8 are the Power On switch pins. Yes, I'm guessing, but really I'm formulating a Hypothesis. An intelligent guess. (Move over Spock) YOU, of course can tell me if I'm right. Yes? Then power supply plugged into power, touch across those two pins briefly, with the screwdriver tip. Will there be a spark? Probably. It is electricity we are dealing with, and the nature of electricity to make a spark when two contacts touch. It is 5 Volts DC. If this becomes too much, let's skip it, and go on to the next test. It also will show whether the problem is the Power On switch, or Power Supply. It is a NO MISS approach. Power Supply comes on you have a bad Power On switch. Power Supply does not come on, you have a bad Power Supply.

  • Anonymous Feb 21, 2013

No the wires are 4 wires, two twisted in each group, one white and gray group, and the 2nd group of two wires twisted together as the white/blue. White blue would be on 2 4 and white gray on 6 8. So I will try 6 and 8.

SOURCE: connector pulled off power buton wires

Hi ford, the most common case colored wires used for negative - is white. The colors blue, red, green are usually positive +. The internal speaker though it uses a 4 pin connector only plugs onto the 2 end pins. Black is connected to negative - pin & red is connected to + positive pin. (Depending on the MB model).
All these case LED's use 5volts DC. If you make a boo-boo, don't freak out. You can usually shut down the system & turn the connector 180 & re-connect it with out hurting the board. Suggest you connect 1 at a time & check in-between each.

Still having trouble, include the name & model number of the MB.
Good luck!
Mike

Clock resetting and power button malfunctioning on my Gateway NV53A laptop.

Replace the CMOS battery. In the Control Panel, Power Options, set to High Performance, open Advanced power settings, set Sleep and Hibernate to Never, Adjust other settings to your preference. Set Screen Saver Time. Always turn off the computer and unplug when not in use, it will prolong life and a reboot every day will reset the computer. I would say you have a issue with the outlet connections/plug. If you have a multimeter you can verify.

My gateway profile 5 won't turn on. Checked plugs

Try to power drain it. Unplug all the power related devices that are connected, like a monitor data cable or external printer, just unplug all the cables in the back after you shut down your computer, press the power switch of your computer and keep it pressed for about 45 secs, release it, plug everything back and check it if its working. As well double check if that particular socket is usable, plug something else in to see if its working.

ok you have laptop. Look for a key called "Fn" it should be around the ctrl or alt key on your keyboard. Try pressing that. After trying to turn it on and it wont. press the Fn key. The last time you were able to use the laptop how did you shut it down? Did you tell it by going threw the menu when logged on. Or just pressed the button? Or did you tell it to shut down then you closed the screen/lid before it actually shut down? Laptops will go into stand by after you tell it to shut down if you dont wait til it shuts down, before shutting the lid. ALso depending on the laptop company you have Trying to figure out which one it is. They have program installed with your system. And depending on how it's set up, will greatly effect how or even IF your laptop will shut down right.

Gateway 420GR will not boot up

Try hit F8 before gateway screen start last known. Start the computer using the last known good configuration
  1. When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
  2. Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
note.gif Notes
  • Choosing Last Known Good Configuration provides a way to recover from problems such as a newly added driver that may be incorrect for your hardware. It does not solve problems caused by corrupted or missing drivers or files.
  • When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, only the information in registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet is restored. Any changes you have made in other registry keys remain.
  • NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.
If this doesn't work you go into setup and make sure your system is finding your hard drive or you will have to find your restore disk. mysleuth

Gateway lcd monitor

First, narrow down the problem to either the monitor, or to the computer itself. Either try the monitor on a spare or friend's computer, or try a known working monitor on your computer. I'd guess your computer is where the issue is at- it isn't booting the Operating System (MS XP or whatever O/S is present on the hard disk. if the computer is the issue, try booting from the CD which came with the computer, (assuming you have that CD). Or, you could see if some computer tech savvy person has a bootable floppy diskette. Basically a "no-boot" problem, can point to a number of problems: hardware issue (bad hard drive etc.), or an operating system problem.
