Did you change (unnoticed perhaps) anything to the settings?
Be aware your camera needs a little time to focus. And when conditions are bad, like little contrast in the subject or bad light conditions, the camera needs more time to focus.
Please try to shoot in automatic mode. Then when you have a subject press the shutter release button half way. Look if you framed correct and then press fully. This way every time the camera should click.
The biggest drain on batteries by this type of camera is because the screen is on all the time. Somewhere in the menu options should be either a screen saver mode or operation timer that can be set to turn-off after a choice of minutes duration you choose.
The first question is where are you storing it? If you are storing it in the camera it may be using a charge over the time it's in the camera. I would try storing the battery out of the camera for testing. If you have been storing it outside of the camera then I would contact the store and see what they are able to do for you (even exchange). If the store will not work with you Nikon most likely has at least a 1 yr warranty since you have only had it for 4 weeks they may just replace the battery or camera (may be defective). I would first start with the store sometimes even though they say 30 days they will make exceptions.
