My reciever volume cuts in and out and crackles when adjusting

I have a 1977 Technic SA-5270 reciever. The volume sounds crackly and distorted when adjusting. If you tap the knob it sometimes clears up. I would like to replace the volume controler but can't find parts for something this vintage(1977)

You can CLEAN / LUBRICATEthe volume control know with a CONTACT/CONTROL cleaner, I use a product from Radio Shack, this works wonders on drum type electo mechanical devices which are basically volume control knobs, easy to do, just remove the round knob and spray into the openings with the small tube attached, and rotate in both directions, be sure to unplug the unit first, on a few occasions it is best to remove the front panel to acheive better coverage to the rheostat type volume body, anyway it always cures the crackling and distorting sound, I would give this a try before replacing the part.

When i turn the volume up to(17-20) my sound cuts out and my speakers make a cracklin noise.i have bought new speakers and rechecked all wires.my speakers are rated at 50 watts rms and my stereo pumps out...

It seems you needs more power to maintain the level of good sound.Maybe the maximum volume is 30 - then the mininum is 15 and you can't hear any cracking sound. If you exceed 15 the minimum, as you said starting 17 - 20 you hear crackling sound .Then you reach ,what they called the "cliping level"so much distortion and crackling sound,your stereo too small to accomodate .You must add a power amplifier so crackling will gone and to fit your listening pressure...

Hope it may help you;

The sound is distorted and overwhelmed by static

Depends what the real problem is.

Is it related to certain sources only - try new or reseated cables,swap it to a different input; single channel - swap to isolate; or certain controls that have become noisy? A shop might be able to get some tuner cleaner into them.

Marshall MG50 DFX, the volume knob OD channel crackles

Either the control is damaged (happens if they get hit) or it is possible the circuit board it is mounted on has broken solder OR worse, a crack near the control. The unit will require servicing. Parts are readily available.

Overload protection

Doe this always go into overload independent of the volume level? Try disconnecting the speakers completely and running the set. Does the set shutdown then too?

Thanks,

Sound prob

Let me know what the Type Numeric Number and Model Number on the bottom of the laptop is. I can look on IBM website and see where the hard drive is in located to the speaker. It has happen on some HP and Toshiba I know from experience where the hard drive causes the speakers to crackle. Not sure why, maybe not enough shielding. The type has 4 Numeric Characters and the Model has 3 Alpha/Numeric Characters.

Let me know
