Hi, I have been using Memorex DVD+RW 4x discs with this recorder
without any problem. Now I have just bought some Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x
disc and when I insedrted it into the player, it failed to prepare the
disc for recording. I tried couple of them and still failed. Does
anyone has any idea why? It's the same brand, same +RW and the only
difference is 4x and 2.4x. Why would 2.4x will not work while 4x works?
Any suggestions/comments are much appreciated.

I contacted Gateway and found out that the AR-230 will not work with anything more than 4x DVD's. Usually it will format DVD-RW's but avoid Maxell brand. Because they use different manufacturers consistant quality doesn't happen.Usually any other cheep brand will work.

How do you know they are the same brand? "Memorex" doesn't make blank DVD's,
they are made by other companies and Memorex can change suppliers at any
time.
Japanese brands are the best, look for "Made in Japan" on blank DVD's when
you buy them.
There are utilities, like Nero InfoTool that will show you the manufacturer
of a DVD, it will be something like "TY" or "CMC".

The reason I said they are the same brand because they both have
"Memorex" labels on both the package as well as the DVD+RWs. I
understand that Memorex probably is not the one actually manurfacture
these and they outsourced to someone else. The one I bought is made in
Taiwan. I have no idea that different DVD+RWs produced by difference
country, even of the same brand, will have different results on
different DVD players.
By the way, I called Gateway, and they are of no help at all! All they
can say is "use a different brand!" Well, thanks a lot!
