Bought a secondhand HP nc6320 notebook, which was on umbutu and password locked. Couldn't get into bios to format drive and install windows xp, so removed it to carry out procedure externally. Put hard drive back in notebook but cant get it to accept it, Comes up with 'Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready' Tried varios disks but because i cannot get into the bios, I cannot change the boot up sequence to cdrom. I realise that one solution may be to change the bios chip but dont know which chip to look for as i cant locate any info to help me, PLEASE CAN YOU HELP?

You Have to Remove RTC battery ( Cmos ) battery. Wait approximately 5 minutes Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer Connect Ac Power to the computer. Do not reinsert any batteries at this time Turn On the computer
all the passwords and all the cmos setting have be cleared.
Paddy it seems windows login problem, may be you are not using correct user name or/and password or may be your password profile got currupted.
Anyway in your case as you have purchased it second hand, then you don't had have any specific program or file on the hard disk. So you can easily format your lap and installed new XP or Vista as per your requirement. It will solve your problem. But you should must have the device drivers to work and installed properly.
Yes if you will use new hard drive then you can install, but same things will be required as per above. So I will recommend you to install on same HDD don't buy new one.
I had the same problem. This is how I reset my password on a compaq or hp nc6320. 1. unplug the power cord 2. unplug the battery 3. take two screws from the ram cover on the back of the laptop (see youtube for this step) 4. open the keyboard 5. unplug the cmos battery cable (very easy to do) 6. plug power cable and turn on the laptop 7. laptop would erase passwords. 8. put everything back together.
to clear cosmos(reset bios) remove rtc battery for a few minutes then replace ;restoring bios to factory set.
battery looks like large digital watch battery.usually located(but not always) underneath keyboard.
