The electric valves are either wrong setting or not working there is a toggle switch on the valve that can turn it off or either direction.

Check that your pool heater supports optional fireman's switch
Black wires on firemans switch connect to pool heater. Power to fireman switch comes from pool equipment and not the timer.
If pool equipment does not support fireman, then cap off the wires.

Fireman switch turns off heater 15-20 minutes before turning off pump.
The purpose is so pool equipment lasts longer.

You can buy the fireman's switch separately, but if this is new timer, then switch is probably good.
Open following link to identify fireman's switch and related parts for the timer:

And take advantage of fixya expert assistance live.
For a price, expert works with you while you work on timer or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

My pool sweep had been doing fine. Now the new pump seems to be dragging as if it is running on half power and the sweep crawls slowly. The pump gets hot and shuts off. The pool filter pump on the left...

My opinion is that new pump is defective.

You posted under Intermatic pool timer.
The timer will not have any effect on the new pump overheating.

Insufficient wiring can cause new pump to overheat.
However if wiring is undersized, and/or if both pumps are turned ON at same time, the circuit breaker would get hot and trip.

Instead of the breaker tripping, your new pump is getting hot, and turning off.
Remember, any pump that slows down and overheats is getting damaged.
Replace the defective pump.

My hot tub won't turn off. I turn the pool on and

check the owners manual. I believe your are experiencing the auto set feature, default perhaps and see if there is a setting to change the auto switching. The older models used to do that all the time.
