what do you mean by working on battery when plugged in.
If it was plugged in to power then it should run on Power not battery.
Suggest power adapter may be faulty and battery is now flat.
Also Suggest trying this - holding power button in for 2 minutes and then try power button again. in case it has locked up
Try taking the battery out before you turn it on. Have seen completely a dead dead battery keeping a laptop from starting up. Does the hard drive activity light flickering? If it is you can try holding down the Function button (FN) and there should be another button to hit to switch between LCD\CRT.
Have you tried changing the power settings,in control panel go to power options and change the time settings for when the laptop is plugged in and running on batteries.
Also change the power scheme to Portable/Laptop.
I hope this helps, please let me know WF
to answer your question "will laptop work if battery is dead, even when its plugged in to an outlet"...the answer is yes. you can even remove your battery and run it off outlet power. As far as your dead laptop...not enough info to diagnose.
Check the ac adapter is the proper one for that laptop.
Check the power jack is not damaged or loose.
let laptop site without battery or power for a few hours.
remove battery and retry power.
try another ac adapter
if that doesn't work, you may have a reset button but not likely to solve the problem.
sounds like motherboard is damaged, or something blew.
