Question about XFX NVIDIA GeForce 8500 Graphic Card

Sparkle NVIDIA GeForce 8500gt crashes comp

I have a HP Pravilion a1600n with 3gbs of ram AMD Athalon 64x2, and a 256mb Sparkle NVIDIA GeForce 8500gt PCi card. Every once and a while i'll be in the middle of a MMORPG and the graphics will get all "screwy". I'll end the game and all of a sudden my computer will restart itself. When it reboots, it doesnt say it recovered from a critical error or anything. Whats the deal? Any help would be awesome. As far as I know i have all the latest drivers, and the onboard video card is disabled.

Ok so i went back to the comp. store and purchased a fan that goes where the PCI slots are to blow air on the GPU. The card has a fan on it, but i think one of the problems might have been that there was a preinstalled 56k modem pci card right in front of the fan. I took that out and installed the other fan behind the card so it get cooled from both sides. Speedfan says the GPU gets up to 51C everyonce and a while but most of the time it stays around 47C. So far since these remedies no crashes, but time will tell. Thank you for your help.

Okay. 50C Sounds normal, so I won't submit this is a possible solution just yet. Let's see how it works first.

Get yourself a utility program such as SpeedFan. I think this problem is heat-related. The card's GPU is either without a fan or doesn't get enough air. When the GPU reaches a certain temperature you start noticing strange artifacts on the screen, tearing, etc... After a while to prevent damage to the GPU the power will be cut or the productivity of the GPU reduced. This will help it to cool down and saves the GPU.

Most likely this is what is causing your system shut-down. To confirm it run SpeedFan when you start your game and before you approach another system fallout check the temperature readout of your CPU and GPU. Afterward list it here and we'll see if your results are marginal or out-of-the-ordinary.

Try to reinstall the stock driver that came along the card in the box, if that still won't help try installing the newest driver, the next newest driver and so on.

Updated driver problem.

Well you should probably roll back that driver to the previous version. Doesn't sound like it gave you the correct new driver for the card or it wouldn't be messing up like that.
