Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

Washer making rubing noise while turning

Good day people,
I have a Kenmore Elite washing machine, model number is 22952. It is a top load machine. We have had it about 5 years. As if yesterday and time the washer starts to spin, be it for agitating or spinning it is making a rubbing noise. Kind of like a belt rubbing against something. I have change my ratcheting "dogs" already on this beast but I cannot figure out how to get into this machine or what it could be. Everything I have read so far is these machines are direct drive (not sure about this one) any help would be greatly welcomed.

I have been back there, I saw about 4 screws, but I have several plastic clisp and the water drain is holding the panel back. I am afraid if I pull that off I wont be able to get it back on.. I can send pictures too

Sorry I didnt mention that. I did remove the hose. The hose has a plastic plate that it connects to. This plate has very little play in it. I can pull it out a little bit and I can see the hose inside that the plate connects to. Maybe I could turn the plate, to get it through the hole. I was just nervous at this part. and stopped and came here for some good advice. :)

ok, got the back off, not sure if I can put it back, lol. Ok now what do I look for on the gear, clutch brake? They all look pretty good and clean.

  • kemp_larson Feb 15, 2009

Ok, i got it spinning and everything looks normal as far as I know. The basket spins balanced. The drain shot out some water to wake me up nicely though.

  • kemp_larson Feb 15, 2009

The sound is like a belt rubbing against something, but I know there is no belt in there tho. Any ideas?

  • kemp_larson Feb 15, 2009

I believe so, it is on the bottom of the basket and on top of what looks like an iron transfer case of some sort

  • kemp_larson Feb 15, 2009

Nothing bent, there is what appears to be some metal shavings below this, but very very little. There is an slight oily patch where the machine was in about the same area this . At first look I was thinking it was detergent that had spilled.

  • kemp_larson Feb 16, 2009

Is this an easy fix? Hopefully. You will love this, my wife needed to do laundry, so I put it all back to gether again......well I forgot to put the drain back in, what a flood that made...lol......she didnt laughthough

Thanx for all your help. Would it be ok to wait untill it goes,or should I fix it before it makes more damage?

  • kemp_larson Feb 16, 2009

On the back of your machine you can remove the back panel think it is about 8 screws. Once you get the back panel off look closely at the motor. Motor mounts, gears, clutch, brake, and if need be take the bottom apart and look at the main bearing on the bottom of the drum to make sure that hasnt gone bad

Trun the machine to spin cycle and see what happens in the back like what wobles and what is steady. Then go from there on what to replace

So you got a bath? Sorry. Well I am glad everything is setup and working proprly. Sometimees on washing machines they stay off balance for a little bit until the system comes around to the changes

Can you see a brake or the clutch spring?

  • Jeremy Reddick
    Jeremy Reddick Feb 15, 2009

Yes exactly. Does that look oily or any thing look out of the ordinary. meaning does it look like there is any type of rubbing or anything bent

Seems like you are losing your main bearing. That would make a loud noise and if you see metal shavings and things like oil it is all signs.

LOL, that is funnym at the same time it isnt. To answer your questtion no this is not to easy of a fix. You literally need to remove EVERYTHING from the bottom of the washing machine. The belt, motor, pulley, clutch, tub outer, and then get to the bearing then realase the bearing and get it back in. Very easy to take apart paint to put back otgether

With the details I have recieved from about the metal shavings I am kind of pulled both ways. To a point I say that it would replace the bearing, but to the other point I would say that just wait for it to go out. I am only worried that if the bearing is rubbing on the bearing race that the cost to replace will be more expensive then just repairing now. If you let it ride then you are going to have to deal with the noise so. I hope that this helps

The model number on Kenmore top loaders is usually printed on a nameplate along the wash tub rim opening under the washer lid. The model number has 8 digits with a prefix of "110". If you cannot locate it, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
