Question about Dell Inspiron 600M Notebook

5 Answers

No Power I have a Dell Inspiron 600m. I was sitting and using my laptop fine last night. I closed it and went to stand up to put it back on my desk and stepped on the power cord that was still plugged into my computer. At that second my computer shut off and I can't get it to turn back on. When I try to plug my ac adapter back into it, the green light turns off as soon as it's plugged into my computer.

I have a 600m and have had problems with the power jack. I have resoldered the jack myself and it worked fine for quite a while. it then got left running on a bed spread and got hot and the jack stopped working again. I didn't have the time to fix it myself so I took it to a store to get it fixed and they put a new jack in it but in the process I found out later that they burnt a hole in the board at the jack. I found out that you can put it on a docking station and the computer will charge and work like normal. it just wont charge or work off the jack. Just some friendly advice so it you need the computer to work right now you have a way. Good Luck!!!!

I had an Inspiron 600m that I loved and used by sitting it on my lap. It started with me having to jiggle the power cord to have it connect. Finally it stopped working. I have taken it to 2 places for evaluation. The consenus is that the part that attaches to the motherboard that connects to the pwer cord has become disattached. It would cost $369. to take the computer apart and put in a new motherboard because just putting a new cord connector (about $200) is just a stop gap measure and it will eventually become unattached. I ended up buying a new computer. I NEVER put it directly on my lap when using it.

Hi,
sir welcome to fixya.com
ok as u said that when u stepped into that at that time the ac adaptor was connect to laptop and then the screen goes off and it is not turning on now,ok what u can try is that try and connect the acadaptor with the different wall outlet and still if it doesnt work then the ac adaptor has gone bad and if it works with the different outlet then that wall outlet has gone bad and what u can also try is that disconnect the power cord and connect it once again to the ad adaptor and then try and connect and try with the differnet ac adaptor, and if another ac adaptor works fine with the laptop then u need to replace the motherboard of the computer, and as u said that as soon as u connect the ac adaptor with the laptop it turns off, what i suggest is that replace the ac adaptor and nmotherboard.......goodluck......and pls rate my solution......pls..

thanks

when you use battery power, does the laptop work or does the battery die right away try letting the battery die itself, like use the laptop till it dies then charge it up again

Wireless network problem with Dell Inspiron 600m.

Your wireless router is acting as the mechanism to hand out IP addresses using DHCP.

Sometimes glitches occur and I would recommend unplugging your wireless router from its power surce, letting it sit for a minute or two and replug it back in.

It will come back to life , reset itself and start handing out IP addresses to all computers and peripherals that normally connect to the router.

Dell 600m won't power from ac

It could be the charging port is loose or has gone bad outrightly. If it is shaky or has a dry joint, then try scrapping off the solder and resoldering ok. Power down the pc and then to AC supply to see whether it charges. If it does, then you probably have a corrupt operating system and should be re-installed. If the RAM becomes unstable, it could also come with such a problem. Hence, I suggest too that a confirmed working and compatible memory should be tried on your pc. If all failed then your motherboard is bad and should be replaced. Good luck

Microphone on Dell Inspiron 600M PC Notebook not working

If your Inspiron 600m had a mic that you used in the past and it is no longer working, please try to press the mute/volume down/up buttons near where the whole of the mic is located.
If, after trying the above, 1 or all 3 buttons do not work, the problem is with the board that is right under the power button (small 2-3 inch length circuit board). It is not making full contact on its connector below. If you put pressure on it (just above the power button) it will all respond. I had the same problem on another 600m laptop.

Dell Inspiron 600m not starting up!

I had this same problem with my 600m laptop.  How many times do the lights flash, before they stop flashing?

Cause: There is a physical problem with the computer that it is detecting at startup diagnostics.

Solution:
You should have two pieces of RAM installed. Carefully, remove the memory slot cover.  Swap the 2 pieces of memory you have in there (please follow memory installation and removal for laptops to the letter, by never touching any of the electronic contacts and handling the memory from its sides). Make sure, they sit in the slot properly (to the best you can see). Then, place back the memory cover, very carefully, and screw in.  If you see the memory door cover not closing properly, the RAM might be improperly inserted.  Please go back to the swapping of RAM step. :)

If this didn't work, 1 of the 2 RAM's you have are no longer functioning properly. Please follow the steps to openning the memory door again and remove RAM in "B" slot first.  Then close it and try to start the computer.

If it still doing the same light flashes, open the memory door and remove RAM in slot "A".  then place the RAM you removed from slot "B" into slot "A".  Then start the computer again.

Dell Inspiron 600M laptop screen issue

The system may not be able to refresh after the defrag. Press ctrl-alt-del and try to turn the computer off from the task manager. If task manager wont popup. You can turn the computer off by holding the power button for 10 seconds or until it turns off.
To prevent file corruption which could be caused by the improper shutdown which you will have to do. Don't forget to tap F8 repeatedly when you restart the computer. Start tapping after you push the power button to turn it on. Choose 'last known good configuration' using the arrow keys on the keyboard. Press enter. And wait until the computer reboots. It should come back to normal.

If it still locks up. Run diagnostics and check if your hard drive is still ok. Turn the computer off. Tap F12 when you turn it back on. Choose diagnostics. If you get an error for 'DSt short test' call dell, so they can give you options for replacement. If all the tests passed, your software is corrupted. Post back what happens.

Dell Inspiron 600m not starting up!

The Caps Lock Flashing then going off is a power on self-test code. Here is the Dell troubleshooting guide to the issue.

From my experience, if removing al customer removable devices failes to make the system post properly, the motherboard will need to be replaced
