Question about LG 50PC3D 50 in. Plasma Television

8 Answers

TV won't turn on.

Our TV made some popping noises and the screen went blank. Pressing the power button causes the red power-on light to blink green 3 times and go red again. On the back of the TV a faint clicking is heard up close to the vent up top when the power button is pressed and again after the power-on light blinks green 3 times. We opened it up and didn't see any burnt components or anything. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

This TV is actually for our Wardroom. I'm on a US Navy ship and we are forward deployed overseas for the next 6 months. I am an electronics technician on the ship so I have repair experience just not the resources or the expertise when it comes to these TVs. If I can find out exactly whats wrong with it I can order the part, have it shipped here, and I can install it. The only problem is that I need to be pretty sure about the solution because I might have only 1 chance to get it right. Its difficult too because this is about the only means of troubleshooting help I can get.

  • harrismddg58 Feb 20, 2009

I'm trying to find a service manual for it online to tell me what the 3 blinking lights are for, but our internet connection is veeery limited out here.

  • harrismddg58 Feb 20, 2009

Already tried that. took it down, blew it out, it was very clean. nothing was loose. nothing looked burnt. plugged it into various other outlets with same outcome. i would check the power supply, but all there are is circuit cards and we aren't sure which board is specifically for power.

  • harrismddg58 Feb 20, 2009

does anyone know what the 3 blinking lights mean? we have LOTS of test equipment on board and thats about the best we can do. We are stuck out here for 6 months and its just up to us to fix it otherwise its just a waste of wall space.

i wll not recommend you to fix it at home thats why i m not giving any technical support pls go to a nearby repair shop and get it repaired

WE ARE ON A SHIP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS! thats the third time i've said that. THERE ARE NO "nearby repair shops." I didn't spend $10 on this site to have someone tell me to go to a repair shop. I came to this site for someone to give me "expert" advice on how to fix a problem.

This is usually an indication that the power supply has failed. It is also possible that there is a short or failure on another board, and the powe supply is in the protect mode.

    The main system board.

If you have unplugged cables from the tv, while the system is in standby you can easily blow all the system panels esp with LCD screens! they are very delicate and fragile

These sets are assembled using the wave soldering process they are known for having cold solder connections. The safety circuitry shuts the TV set down or will keep it from turning on when it detects a problem. This model of TV has over 2,000 parts which includes millions of transistors inside the integrated circuits. The capacitors will change value, leak and become defective. Resistors will change value and burn. Diodes and IC can go bad. This may have a domino effect and cause other parts to fail. Replacing one defective part may make the TV operate for a short time but the part will fail again if the parts that caused the failure to begin with are not replaced. The only way to know for sure which parts that are no longer within factory specs and for a proper repair all the electronics must be diagnosed by someone with the correct electronic test equipment specifically designed for TV service and the skills to use the test equipment. I wish I could tell you there was a quick fix or button to push that would fix the TV but that is not the case or the solution needed to get the TV operating correctly.

This is the most common failure of this model the { Y-Sustain Board. }
Also try and hold the power button for 10 sec. but I think the Y-Sustain Board went out.

The problem / symptom you are facing is a protection mechanism when a fault is detected the tv goes into protection mode and displays a error message in this case 3 blinks.

First I would suggest to check your warranty
2nd, you will need a service manual which includes the list of codes and explanations of them.

I have to warn you, its not recommended attempting to fix a tv at home. Do you have previous experience?

When I turn on my Viore LC24VXF60PB tv; it comes on with a blank screen for 20 sec; makes a popping sound then turns itself off.

A popping sound is usually caused by a failed power supply. Because of the possibility of fire, unplug the TV and call a service technician or, it the TV has some age on it, shop for a new one. Check out the Consumer Reports ratings before buying a new set. You'll get the best quality TV that way.

Hi,
Flashing red light in Sony tv indicates that tv got some internal problem and went on protection mode to avoid further damage. Now it needs service/ repair.
Blinking red light also has an error code that has info about possible cause of problem, let me know how many times red light is blinking after 3 seconds ling pause and model number of your tv to provide you helpful info.
Thanks.

We heard a "pop" noise

The pop noise could be a capacitor poping its top up.This is a common problem to most TV sets today. Usually located at the power supply board.Once this parts give up it usually shorts the circuit and blows a fuse.Replacements of these parts mentioned will often remedy the problem.Flashing power indicators indicate a problem. If you have the chance of counting how many the blinks are I could have told you the problems code are and the source of the problem.

I own a Samsung HL-R5067W 50'' DLP. Set is about 3 years old. Recently I heard a loud pop while viewing, picture distorted, but never went blank. I turned set off. When turned on again a loud whining noise...

Check your color wheel. There is a DIY guide for replacing the color wheel. Mine did the same thing yours is and my color wheel was all busted up. Unfortunately after replacing the color wheel my set continues to do the same thing, but this could mean I need to replace the ballast as well.

Sony KDF-46E2000 - Screen Goes Blank

The lamp can cause the picture to cycle without spitting out a lamp error. I'd replace the lamp and clean out the dust/dirt from fans, etc to hopefully resolve your issues.

Sony KDF-46E2000 - Screen Goes Blank

You definitely have a bad lamp. Sony rates the lamp life at between 4000 and 8000 hours. There are 3 things that effect the lamp life, listed in order of importance:
1) number of times the lamp is turned on and off. Every time the lamp is first fired, it takes life off the lamp. Customers I see that turn the TV on in the morning, leave it on all day and then turn it off on the evening can get up to 12000 lamp hours
2) ventilation. Be sure you have at least 6 inches of open space all the way around the set and that the vents are clear of dust and debris.
3) power. If the power is interrupted when the set is on, there cannot be a proper cool down cycle. The fans will run after you turn the set off to properly cool it down, if the power is lost this cannot happen. If your power is unreliable, buy a small UPS to let the set finish a cool down cycle

Occasionally a lamp will faill before the average lamp time due to being defective. from your purchase date it sounds like you got about average lamp time. Be sure to purchase AN ORIGINAL SONY LAMP as a replacement, becuase the aftermarket lamps are bad news, Be sure to rate this solution. Thanks!
