Hi and welcome to FixYa,

It would seem that defrag has sensed error in the drive and therefore requires that the hard drive C be checked for errors and fixed. You may want to try:

  • Windows key + R;
  • type "cmd" less the quotes, Enter;
  • type chkdsk /f, Enter;
  • it may take some time depending on the size of your C and its contents.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again Ann,

    Glad that your initial concern has been addressed, appreciate the rating too.

    To your next concern, most computers would slow down because of insufficient memory. While adding more memory would outright solve this, perhaps your slow laptop simply needs to disable unnecessary programs running in the background.

    Initially, try:

    • Windows key + R;

    • type "msconfig" less the quotes, Enter;

    • click on Startup tab;

    • un-check programs that says update, monitor and/or anything else you think is unnecessary;
    Pls post back what Windows you are running, XP or Vista.

How do you run a disk defrag

On my PC I scroll the mouse over the the start icon on the bottom left of desktop then click on accessories then system tools. You should see disk defragment in the list, if computer has multiple drive you should do each one ( should be a drop down menu to choose which drive to defragment) there might be a choice to check disk first and it will tell you if it needs to be done or does not need to be done at this time. Also there is a disk cleanup option that is also good to do to remove cookies and temporary files, freeing up space and increasing computer speed.

How do i defrag my Acer Aspire 2930Z laptop personally

To Defrag your Hard Drive follow this simple steps. Double click on "my Computer". Then right click on "C", that is your hard drive. Click on properties. Then select "tool". In there you can see the "Defragmentation" click on it. The defrag tool will popout. Highlight the drive you want to defrag in that case "C" Run analyze then defrag now.

Disk defragmenter not done

You are trying to defrag the defrag program. Try this instead. Unfortunately, two downloads are required. The first is contig.exe:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897428.aspx

it is a 100 KB file. The second file is power defragmentor GUI and is 409 KB: Download it at:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Power-Defragmenter-Download-20185.html

Create a Pwr Defrag folder and extract the zipped file there. Save the contig.exe into the same folder. Make a shortcut to the Power Defragmentor application and put the shortcut on your desktop or where ever you choose. Run the GUI and select the drive to defrag. There will be an option screen next. I use the last selection, Power Mode.

This is the BEST defrag program I've found.

Good luck, and please let me know how it works for you.

Computer wont boot and i cant get to the start screen to try rec

The computer needs maintenance periodically just like a car needs servicing. The computer generates temporary files when it is running and these consume hard disk space if they are not removed, also these files will slow down your computer.
To service your computer you should at lease once a month do a Disk Cleanup and a Defrag.
The Recycle bin should be emptied periodically.

To do a Disk Cleanup Click on My Computer, then right click on the C Drive, then click on Properties, then Disk Cleanup, then tick all the boxes to recover the hard disk space. (This process could take a few hours depending when it was last done and the size of the hard disk).

To do a Defrag, click on Programs, click on Accessories, then System Tools, then Defrag. then select the C Drive, then start the Defrag.

Again this will take a long time, you may want to start these processes overnight, don't stop them let them run till they finish. The next time you run them, it will not take as long.

Dell Inspiron 600M laptop screen issue

The system may not be able to refresh after the defrag. Press ctrl-alt-del and try to turn the computer off from the task manager. If task manager wont popup. You can turn the computer off by holding the power button for 10 seconds or until it turns off.
To prevent file corruption which could be caused by the improper shutdown which you will have to do. Don't forget to tap F8 repeatedly when you restart the computer. Start tapping after you push the power button to turn it on. Choose 'last known good configuration' using the arrow keys on the keyboard. Press enter. And wait until the computer reboots. It should come back to normal.

If it still locks up. Run diagnostics and check if your hard drive is still ok. Turn the computer off. Tap F12 when you turn it back on. Choose diagnostics. If you get an error for 'DSt short test' call dell, so they can give you options for replacement. If all the tests passed, your software is corrupted. Post back what happens.

Cannot defrag my hard drive..

Go to Control Panel, Select System and select the Advance Tab. Now Select Settings Under Performance and again select the advance tab. Under Virtual Memory select Change. Make sure that the Paging File Size for selected Drive for the Drive partition you want to Defrag has either a custom at least 2 times the amount of installed RAM if the space is available or is set to System Managed Size.

Hope this helps :)

Wont defrag

sounds like you have either a virus or malware affecting your PC - first run scandisk to make sure there are no physical problems with the disk - then download an anti-malware package like spybot S&D - this is free and you may be surprised what it finds on your system!
once this is done try defragging again -alternatively - convert your HD to NTFS and this will not only speed it up but reduce the need to defrag dramatically

hope this helps 8)
