HP F4180 will not scan!

Despite downloading the full driver package for windows vista as opposed to the lite version it wont scan. When I press the scan button on the printer the on / off button on the printer flashes for approx 30 seconds then stops flashing! Help!! The printer prints with no problem but it just wont scan!

I have much the same problem. I use Vista Ultimate 32-bit and all the latest software for the HP F4180, which works fine through the computer BUT the on-off button on the physical control panel on the machine doesn't work - it's just lit constantly - and when I press the Scan button "llareggub" happens (Dylan Thomas, Under Milk Wood). So if you ever get an answer please give me a wink through www.lugnetmedia.com - I'll buy you a beer!

HP does not support Vista operating system, no software or drivers for it are offered at all. If Vista, you also cannot use either the scan button on the "All-in-One" or the usual method of HP Solution Center. HP has discontinued the F4180 and supports it only minimally.
You can scan via Windows Photo Gallery, or though Paint, or through Windows Fax and Scan. File - Import from camera or scan, or File - scan, are paths.

I have loved this printer/scanner but plan myself to avoid anything HP makes in the future because of this "support".

How can I scan a document?

First do you have the full software installed or just a generic OS driver? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=emea_middle_east&product=3177566&os=219&lang=en has the drivers for supported OS versions. Sometimes the generic driver only runs the printer.

It is best to start your scanner from the computer the first time. The buttons on the scanner will only work after you set the destinations in the software, if the monitoring program is running. Place your document face down on the glass (or face up in an ADF). Launch the HP Solution Center (Start > All Programs > HP folder > Solution Center or by double-clicking the shortcut on the desktop) Click the appropriate button (Scan Picture or Scan Document) and adjust the settings as needed. Click Scan. Use the Help function to set up the destinations for using the buttons on the all-in-one.

If you want to scan without using the HP Solution Center, you can't use the buttons on the scanner. Paint (XP, Vista or Win7) will acquire scans (File > Import from Camera or Scanner). Vista (some versions) and Win7 have Windows Fax and Scan as well (New Scan). Vista comes with Photo Gallery (and the program is available as a free download for Win7) that can also acquire scans.

I hope this helps.

Using my F380 all in one, how do I scan to my

Scan an image
You can start a scan from your computer or from the HP All-in-One.
This section explains how to scan from the control panel of the HP All-in-One only.
To use the scan features, the HP All-in-One and computer must be connected and turned on.
The HP Photosmart Software (Windows) or HP Photosmart Mac Software (Mac) must also be installed and running on your computer prior to scanning.
● On a Windows computer, look for the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the Windows system tray (at the lower right side of the screen, near the time) to verify the software is running.
Note Closing the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the Windows system tray can cause the HP All-in-One to lose some of its scan functionality. If this happens, you can restore full functionality by restarting your computer or by starting the HP Photosmart Software.
● On a Mac, the software is always running.
Tip You can use the HP Photosmart Software (Windows) or HP Photosmart Mac Software (Mac) to scan images, including panorama images. Using this software, you can also edit, print, and even share your scanned images. For more information, see the onscreen Help that came with the HP All-in-One.
To scan to a computer
1. Place your original print side down on the left front corner of the glass.
2. Press Scan.
A preview image of the scan appears on your computer, where you can edit it.
3. Make any edits to the preview image, and then click Accept when you are finished.
To stop scanning ➔ Press Cancel on the control panel.
If this doesn't work for some reason you should also be able to scan using windows camera and scanning wizard, the link will show you how if you have XP, just scroll down past the "how to print" section.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/hwandprograms/printfaxscan.mspx
or this if you have Vista:
If you cannot find the scanner wizard it could be because your version of vista doesn't have it, I'm not 100% but I think it was only packaged with the business version of vista.
If this is the case then you can download a free program called IrfanView from there site: http://www.irfanview.com/
Click the Start icon. Click All Programs .
Click Windows Photo Gallery .
Click File and then click Import From Scanner or Camera .
Click Import .
Click Scan .

How to use a scanner?

What OS do you have? If you have a Windows XP or 2000, download and install the full-featured software and use the HP software to scan.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=306895&

If you have Vista and Win 7, HP doesn't have a full-software driver package. You will be using the drivers built into the OS.

For Vista, you can scan using the Windows Photo Gallery (File, Import from Scanner) or Paint (File, From Scanner or Camera) and with some versions Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan, File, Scan).

If you have Windows 7, Paint and Windows Fax and Scan will let you access the images/documents on the scanner.

In all cases, a good cable and ports will make scanning much less frustrating.

I hope this helps.

(alternatively, you could get third party software for Vista or 7. PaperPort is one example)

HP PRINTER PHOTOSMART C4180 on WINDOWS VISTA

Although the original poster mentioned networking he/sredm.gifhe also seemed to be asking about HP all-in-one issues in general and Vista compatibility. Networking, scanning, copying and printing can have seperate and integrated issues to varying degrees. This may not just be a scanner networking general query.

In my case I downloaded and installed the additional bundled software per HP's advice while trying to get the scanner to scan at the dpi level advertized for the unit. Neither Vista or HP had drivers that worked unless I installed the package. Low resolution scanning worked fine as well as the copying and printinting features. I rarely need such high scanning options but it should have worked as advertized since it was sold by an HP distributor as Vista compatible.

The downloaded AIO did allow higher resolution when scanning but caused other NON-NETWORKING issues. My computer is not networked. There is also the issue of the scan button on the printer not working with Vista. It does work with pre-Vista. Again not a network issue but a driver issue with Vista.

Taken from the MHTML file from the unit software found after the purchase......

HP Printers - The Scan Button on the Printer Does Not Work Correctly When the Printer is Connected to a Windows Vista Computer

Issue
When the scan button is pressed on the printer, nothing happens. The scan button does not work correctly.

Solution
Scan documents using Windows Fax and Scanning or Paint.

Cause
The drivers in the Windows Vista operating system do not support button press functionality on the printer. END EXERPT.

Button functionality. DPI resolution. There are driver issues with some of the HP units and Vista. Not just networking issues.

In my opinion these issues should have been fully disclosed prior to purchase or functional Vista drivers should be an option. Therefore I offer the warning that Vista may have issues with this and other software and hardware.

I only speak of non-networking issues but either way a unit should work as advertized or sold. My comments are based on my personal experience with one unit in this particular situation. After all Vista is fairly new to most of us.
