Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop
Normal 0 I have non-working Dell Dimension 8400. I am trying to figure which component/s have gone bad. I dismantle all the components, removed cpu, heat sink, cleaned applied thermal paste, got 500W new PSU. I first tried powering up just the MB no beeps, I placed CPU on MB and powered up I get beeps. 6 Long beeps G,Y,Y,Y. I tested again with 1GB stick on DIMM1. I get 2 long, 2 short, 2 long beeps back panel shows G,Y,G,Y. I took off the CPU power connector, switched on the power I get no beeps. I don't get any beeps when I take off 4-pin CPU power connector. I am wondering if its the bad CPU? I went through each capacitor to see if any bulged or leaked ones, I found none. Why would I get G,Y,G,Y which is memory error beeps if its a bad CPU? I have another Dell optiplex P4 1.8 Ghz. Just to test, I was wondering if I can try placing optiplex CPU on Dell 8400? Will P4 1.8Ghz CPU work on dell dimension 8400 LGA 775 MB? This will help me eliminate the problem. Any inputs would be a great help. I was think of getting a new board, now I am not sure if it’s a bad CPU or bad MB? What a pain.
