    Tech5508,

This sounds like a good plan but what if I don't have a Windows CD? I am currently running windows XP but it came with the computer. Is This something that I can download from Microsoft?

    Thanks,

    Don

    Hey Tech 5508!!!

You are THE MAN! My husband, who can hardly check his own e-mails, fixed MY computer under your guidance. I am amazed!!!!! You are wonderful! I mean - just phenomenal. Thank you for your continued guidance when he was not able to fix it at first. If I could, I'd give you a BIG raise!!!! - Don's wife, Linda

p.s. Just for the record, I do know how to check my e-mail, I just don't like to!!! Thanks again for your help. Don.

Hello.

If you got a Windows CD try the following...

Reboot the computer and enter bios by..
When the blue DELL™ logo appears, press <F2> immediately
You might have to try this a few times since you have to be really quick,

In system setup (bios)
Set CD Drive as first device in the boot sequence. Press F10 then chose "Y" to save.

Reboot.

When asked if you want to start on CD just press any key.

The menu on your cd should have a repair option.

Hope this helps.

Regards...

    Hello again.

If you dont have your XP CD then you will have to follow the instructions from the link below.
However this means that you need access to another computer that has a floppy drive and to use a floppy disk.

Can't start up message is "NTLDR is missing" I

You can try calling Dell to see if they will send you a re-installation CD. If it's out of warranty they will charge you for it. Either way you will need to have the OS (operating system software) CD to re-install Windows XP or Vista.

My dell dimensions e310 is having problems.. when i power it on it says Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-2 Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup.. When i press F1 it says NTLDR is missing... I...

1 . Insert your Windows installation CD. Reboot the computer. Your computer detects the boot media in your drive and asks you to press any key to boot to the Windows installation disk. Press the space bar on your keyboard. A blue installation window is shown.
2 . Press the "R" key to start the Recovery Console process. Press the "1" key to open the command line console. You are prompted for the administrator password. Enter it into the console and press "Enter."
3 . Type the following text into the command line:

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:

4 . Replace "e" with the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive. This command copies the NTLDR file from your installation CD to your hard drive
5 . Remove the CD from the drive and reboot the computer again. The Windows operating system should successfully boot.

Thanks for using Fixya.

  • Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD drive, and then restart the computer.
  • Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted.
  • When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
  • Press 1 (One) to select windows XP and then hit enter.
  • When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  • At the command prompt, start typing

COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\ (Considering that D is your CD Rom Drive)
COPY D:\i386\ntdetect C:\ (a file that may also be missing)

Then rebuild the boot configuration boot.ini file by
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini (if not found skip the next line)
DEL C:\boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild

I just fot my hard drive wiped and am trying to reinstall windows xp. When I try to boot from the cd a message says "NTLDR missing". What the hell?

Just do a fresh install and don't bother trying to do a repair install.

You shouldn't get that problem then.

Good luck and post back on how it works out.

Keep showing ntldr missing

your ntcommand.com or ntldr has been deleted. this can be repaired by using the xp or vista cd. If vista, it should prompt you as it will reginise that there is an issue.

If XP then you need to go to the repair console and use the fixmbr command. See this Microsoft page

I have a reformatted hard drive in a Dell dimension 43000. Now on turning on I get NTLDR is missing message. If I use F2 or F12 to try & correct the set up the USB keyboard stops working so I am then...

Reinstall the Operating system (Windows). Missing file is from there. Many computers don't switch on USB when in BIOS - borrow a keyboard with a standard PS/2 plug on it, but the USB will be fine once the Operating System is reinstalled.

Dell computer running windows xp will not boot. NTLDR compressed

best thing to do if you can get one is a propper install disk and then follow these instructions..

1. Start the Recovery Console. If you do not have the Recovery Console installed, start it from the Windows Xp compact disc (CD). To do this, follow these steps:

a. Insert the Windows XP CD and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.

b. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.

c. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the recovery console.

d. When prompted, type the Administrator password.

2. At the command prompt, type "cd \" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

3. Type "ren ntldr ntldr.old" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

4. Type "map" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

5. Note the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD. It is displayed in a format similar to the following: D: \Device\CdRom0

6. Type "expand <drive>\i386\ntldr._" (without the quotation marks) (where <drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD), and then press ENTER. For example:

Expand d:\i386\ntldr._ <ENTER>

Note the underscore character after the "."

The following message appears: ntldr, 1 file(s) expanded.

7. Type "exit" (without the quotation marks). The computer restarts.

8. Remove the Windows XP CD and start the computer normally.

Problem booting up dell dimension 2300 desktop.

You have no choice either you should reinstall your system, you should provide windows CD/DVD installation and boot your system using this disk.

However; you should backup your important files be cause most likely the all files will be removed during the installation process.
