Question about GE JEM25 Microwave Oven

15 yr-old GE electric oven takes over an hour to preheat to 450

Our oven has recently started taking a loooong time to preheat. Once it reaches temp it cooks fine, but just a little slower. Last night it took over an hour to reach 450 degrees. Can my husband make an easy repair?

This is a full-sized GE oven model #JKP64

IF you can find parts for it anymore, it needs at least 1 heating element. Depending on exactly where it was produced, the wires will either be held in place with nuts on the ends of the element or they might be silver soldered. Hopefully the first. You didn't state the model or serial number. Is this a full size oven or a toaster oven?

After jiggling the lower burn element the oven heated up in the normal time. Perhaps a connection had come loose.

Convection oven shuts off after a minute when trying to bake. Does this during Compubake also.. Does not preheat

Possibly a bad oven temp sensor. If the uinit doesnt read a temperature it will shut down to prevent a fire or over heating. The temp sensor is a thermister A temperature variable resistor that changes value as the temp changes. so If the main board doesnt get a response within a vertain resistance range it shuts things down. Sometimes since those parts are in the actual cooking area and subject to the heat and steam from cooking they can rust and break, or just get old and break. Or slam the door and break, you get the idea!!

Press convection button, then press button with temp you want, then press start to preheat. Once preheated, either press cancel once, to allow time to be input, or engage door button, an press Time and enter your cooking time. Then press start again

When I preheat the oven it takes an hour to reach 200 degrees. Is this normal? I am sure it was a lot quicker than this.

An hour to go from room temperature to 200 degrees F (or even C for that matter) is unacceptable.

There is a problem with either a control, sensor or heating element. You should have this oven serviced to restore it to proper working order.

Built in oven takes hours to reach desired degrees set.

There may be a problem with either the door seal or the thermostat.

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If it still fails, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here in case you don't have yours.

Once you look it over, if you still have a problem,
GE Customer Service is here and they should be able to help you check it or send service if you have a problem.

Oven stop working while it was preheating to 450 degrees

Chances are the oven cavity thermostat has failed.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

I recently bought a microwave/convection oven. Model #JES1290SK 02. I understood that cooking time would be lessened for most recipes when using the convection oven, but it takes longer every time....

Takes much longer now to heat things

I think you have two separate problems.

Taking a long time to heat is almost always a failing magnetron.

The cover on the side is the waveguide cover. If your waveguide cover is burned or broken, it will need to be replaced.

It protects the waveguide and magnetron from grewase and food particles, which can cause arcing and damage.

Hopefully your oven is just under the one-year mark and GE will fix it free under warranty.

Otherwise, they will replace the magnetron at no part cost, but labor will be your responsibility.
