Dont use it! You need to pull the cooktop and see what is wrong. There is a chance that the circuit for the surface light is the only standing circuit left because the heating element is bad or loose
Contact a professional to have the unit diagnosed for repairs. Sounds like the heating elements are either faulty or the main control board won't allow the unit to heat up correctly.
Does it reach the temperature and then back down, or does it take too long to get to your set temperature? Either you have a faulty element or a bad communication error with the main control board.
either its the oven sensor rod located at the top of the ovens cavity,or your bake element could be getting a hot spot which is when it gets a discolored spot in the element and can no longer pass sufficient current to heat the oven past 250 degrees
The limit switch in a Ge oven usually works or is blown. I would look at the oven sensor located at the back of the oven. It should read approximately 1k ohm at room temperature. http://www.on-timeappliance.com/ovenrepair.html
It is a problem with neither of the two it is the sensor reads the oven temp and shuts off the heating element when it is reached, it is called the thermal probe or thermostat.
