Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

The unit turns on but the it's thermal fuse/breaker shuts it off

When heating more that one item in sequence the oven will shut down and take 5-10 minutes to reset. My oven seems to have a different sound in the past three weeks. The interior of the oven is getting hot and it fills with water vapor during a cooking sequence. I do not believe there is any fan sound when cooking. Is there a seperate fan fuse? or is there a way to test to confirn if the fan is damaged?

This can be caused when the internal cooling fan is not running or by a magnetron that is failing.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You could have burned something out on unit. Check fuse or contact GE. Look in manual for trouble shooting tips.

I assume your oven is electric and not gas? If so, consider replacing the fuses on the oven, which are located in the back. THese fuses are pretty cheap, just ask around at the hardware store. This should fix your problem.

My microwave shows nothing on display and will not turn on

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
First check is the main fuse of the unit. On countertop units, you will need to take the shell off. The fuse will be close to where the cord comes through into the unit. OTR units, this main fuse is usually behind the control panel or possibly behind the vent. Usually the fuse is obvious if blown, otherwise test with an OHM meter, if open, replace fuse.
Some brands will also have a thermal cut-off fuse in the incoming voltage line to the control board. Older Maytags and Samsungs have this fuse in it. This thermostat looking fuse is usually above the oven cavity somewhere under the outside shell. Sometimes you can get to it through the vent of OTR models. Test with an OHM meter, replace if open.

If it's heating and shuts down, the thermal fuse may be defective, monitors the temperature of the magnetron, or the magnetron is overheating.

I have a LG Microwave that shuts itself off before its done cooking any comments? The lights and clock are still on so its still getting power

The microwave oven has a temperature sensitive thermal fuse, if the magnetron overheats "heats food" it shuts that sector down until it cools down, "up to 30 minutes before it will reset" sometimes the thermal fuse becomes defective opening up because it has become intermittent over time. This is a tricky problem to diagnose and should be checked by somebody who is familiar with these types of devices.

Microwave shut down while operating. No breaker

The most common reasons this model would shut down would be a blown 20A ceramic line fuse, magnetron thermal fuse, or oven cavity thermostat.

(If those are good, I would suspect the control panel assembly, which we regularly repair such for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so with a one-year guarantee)

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Accessing some components (especially the oven cavity thermostat) for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download Maytag owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

JVM1850BH02 Microwave completely shut down, not working after...

The extreme heat has opened up one of the thermostats / thermal cutouts (TCOs) in the oven.

If it was the bottom TCO or magnetron TCO, you should be able to access them by just removing the control panel.

But if it's the one on top of the cavity, the oven will have to come out of the wall, then you need to pull of the outer cover..
