How long have you had the unit?

What is type of OS, XP Pro, Home?

Has it worked for you in the past? If so, what software or hardware had changed?

The wireless network is not working

> the wireless network is not working

1. Look for an ON/OFF switch on your PC laptop, which will enable/disable the wireless device.

2. Look for a key-sequence (FN/function-plus-F-something) to enable/disable the wireless device.

3. Take another wireless device (iPod Touch, or iPad, or a different laptop) and see if it can connect to your wireless network.

4. Click "View Available Wireless Networks". Is the SSID of your network listed?

5. Do you have a "system administrator" (your job-location or your school) who can check that the wireless network is working?

Wireless connection wont work

To check if the wireless card is bad or OK.
Go to Control Panel - Network Connections - Is the wireless network connection listed and if so is there a red X on this connection?
If so, right click on the wireless and click Repair - this may fix your problem, it forces the wireless router to issue the wireless card with a new IP address.
If it doesn't fix the problem then go to Control Panel - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager - scroll down to Network Adapters and expand and check your wireless card, is it Working and Enabled?
If has a yellow ? against it or not working then reinstall the wireless card driver.
If the wireless card is built-in check the BIOS to see if the wireless card is enabled, if not enable the wireless card and repeat the above steps.
If this doesn't fix your problem then the wireless card is faulty and you need a new wireless card. You can get a PCMCIA wireless card to replace the faulty wireless card. If the wireless card is built-in then disable the faulty wireless card in the BIOS before you install the new wireless card.

I own a HP DV9000 my wireless quit working

Check the Device Manager to see if the Wireless LAN device is working and enabled. If not reinstall the Wireless LAN driver.
If the Wireless LAN is OK and enabled then sometimes when you bootup the Wireless LAN card doesn't get an IP address from the wireless router. This usually has a red X on the wireless connection icon and sometime you get an error message "Limited or no connection".
To get the router to issue the wireless LAN card with a new IP address, righr click on the Wireless icon and click on Repair.
You can also power down the router wait 15secs and power up the router again then reboot the computer.
If it still doesn't work you could have a faulty wireless card, see it your friendly computer shop can test it for you.

Wireless LAN problem

Make sure that the built-in wireless lan is disabled. If your pc is XP or vista, uninstall the new WIRELESS LAN(go to control panet, add/remove programs), select the Atheros Software. Leave the WIRELESS ADAPTER connected to your pc. Insert the disc, do not run the set up. RESTART THE PC. The drivers for the WIRELESS ADAPTER should install, if not load drivers manually.
MAKE SURE WIRELESS ZERO CONFIGURATION for XP is running. You should be able to detect wireless networks.

Unable to get a wireless connection outside of home

Hi

More info is needed to clarify and help suggested solution.

1) What type of wireless infrastructure do you have at home?
a. Which wireless band is used at home? Wireless band a or b/g or n?
b. Are you able to connect wirelessly at home? If so, what wireless router/modem is in use?
c. Which wireless card is installed on the laptop? Which drivers are installed for the wireless card?
d. What wireless channel is being used at home?

2) What type of Wireless infrastructure do you have at work?
a. Which wireless band is used at work? Wireless band a or b/g or n?
b. Does the wireless management application/utility "pick" wireless signals but you are unable to connect or no signals are "picked" up?
c. What wireless channel is being used at work?

Note: Generally, wireless IEEE 802.11a cards cannot be used for 802.11b/g or 802.11n wireless networks. Some cards are rated 802.11a/b/g but they must be set to either 802.11a or 802.11b/g and not both. In the US wireless channels allowed are 1-11. Generally in Europe it is 1-14. Japan and other regions have there own specifications. Setting the wrong region (channel range) can cause signal problems.

You may bring these questions to work IT as you may not have all the answers.
