Thanks for the quick reply. When I click the flap open, the plate remains fixed in its place, but as soon as I start closing it, the plate near the power button as well as the plate above the power light starts coming off. At the bottom of my screen, i see the screw (it is not really a screw, bcoz, I can not tighten it on that end)!!

    Please advice!!

It sounds like the battery isn't charging. These laptops are famous for breaking the power plug solder joints. If the joints break than the battery wont charge and no power will get to computer to start it. The repair is to take it apart and resolder the plug joints. I would however buy a new one on eBay and solder it in instead of trying to fix the old one. Sometimes they break inside the plug and you cant see it, to find it you need to do a continuity test with a digital voltmeter.

Screen goes black within 2 minutes of turning on

There may be a dry solder joint on the motherboard which is opening up as the motherboard gets hot, breaking the connection to the screen.
Have you noticed the machine getting hot?
If that is the problem, you will probably need to take it into a PC repair shop to have the motherboard baked, which will close any dry solder joints.

The screen is going black like its in sleep mode when i open it up

I had the same problem. While rebooting the laptop the screen would be on for a few seconds after it finished rebooting then the display would go black. If you looked very carefully at the screen you could see the image was there but there was no light behind the screen to make the image visible.

I removed the black plastic display bezel cover that goes around the edge of the display screen to check out the lights and wiring. I found a small magnet that belongs inside the display bezel had fallen out of it's slot in the plastic bezel and was stuck to the inverter pcb (printed cicuit board). To fix this problem I secured the magnet into it's slot inside the display bezel with a bit of glue. After fixing the problem and putting the display bezel back together the laptop worked normally.

This magnet is how the laptop knows the lid is closed. When the laptop is closed the magnet is moved closer to a magnetic switch on the inverter pcb and activates the switch. The laptop thinks it is closed and shuts off the lights behind the display screen. When the magnet fell out of it's slot and stuck to the inverter it activated the magnetic switch all the time whether the laptop was open or closed. This caused the laptop to think it was closed and shut off the lights behind the dispaly screen as soon as the reboot finished.

Toshiba satellite a300 laptop display problem screen black, no display at all.

You laptop either needs a new Cable from the Motherboard to the Screen, a new power inverter, or a new screen. Most commonly, I have seen the video cable get smashed between the hinges/plastic case, and this causes the wires to break apart, leading to a black screen.

Here is the power inverter for your laptop: http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Satellite,A300,PSAG0U-0CF035,Laptop,Inverters.aspx

Here is the video cable for your laptop: http://www.notebooksolutions.ca/zc/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3392&zenid=7903c7a1a62c4c2cbfef6ea30865373c

Here is the LCD screen for your laptop: http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Satellite,A300,PSAG0U-0CF035,Laptop,LCDs-Displays.aspx

If the display comes back, slightly, when you lift the display lid up and down, this would be a sign that your cable is bad. If you get no reaction from opening and closing the lid, you may have a bad inverter or screen. It is most commonly the inverter or the cable.

If you have a spare monitor, you could plug it into the VGA connector on your Laptop as a temporary solution. If after plugging the monitor in, you get no display, try pressing Fn + F5.

The screen was black when turned on but could make out what was on the screen when facing the light

You have 1 of 2 issues...

1.) You have a Bad LCD Bulb.. You can get a replacement LCD Bulb and change the LCD Bulb inside the Display which is cheaper and easier than replacing the whole backlight panel.... LCD bulbs cost around $12 Be careful these bulbs are Fragile and if bent when installing- will break...

2.) You have a failing Power Inverter... this is located just under the screen display panel,, it is a circuit board that the screens lcd bulb plugs into and the display cable plugs into... this inverter board converts the DC power in the laptop back to AC power because the screen needs more power to power the lcd bulb...

Your Problem Is One of These 2 Things... Your Best Bet Is To Test The Power Inverter First - Since It Is The Easier Of The 2 To Replace/Repair

Dark display

Do you have another screen attached? This will cause this trouble. If not, if you look closely at the screen, can you see an image? You might be able to shine a light into the screen and see an image. If so, sounds like the inverter is or has died. Try tapping the bottom plastic on the screen when the laptop is on and see if it flickers. If it does perhaps it is a loose connection/solder joint on the inverter board.

Inspirion laptop 1521. monitor stopped working.

Hi,
The problem is the inverter, possibly a bad connection or a dry solder joint.

To check this remove the screen bezel (plastic screen surround). At the bottom of the screen you will see an elongated piece of circuit board with wires coming from either end covered by frosted plastic.
That is the inverter, check the connections on the inverter (both sides) and power the laptop up to check the display, to remove it gently pull the plugs from each end and remove the screw from the middle and pull the board away.
Look on the back of the inverter itself for a copper coil, if you re-solder the solder points around the coil you may find it works again as components that suffer from extreme heat the solder joints dry causing bad connections, re-floating the solder solves the problem in 90% of cases.

Good luck.

Hi,
It sounds very much like the problem is the inverter cable or the inverter itself.
Remove the screen bezel (plastic screen surround), this will reveal the whole screen. At the bottom of the screen you will see an elongated piece of circuit board with wires coming from either end covered by frosted plastic.
That is the inverter, check the connections on the inverter and power the laptop up to check the display, to remove it gently pull the plugs from each end and remove the screw from the middle and pull the board away and replace it.
If you have not got a replacement yet look at the inverter for a copper coil, if you re-solder the solder points around the coil you may find it works again as components that suffer from extreme heat the solder joints dry causing bad connections, re-floating the solder solves the problem in 90% of cases.

HP Pavilion dv5 laptop screen keeps blacking out. I have to move it back and forth to get the screen to come back on... sometimes it takes a few minutes to get it in a position where the screen appears...

You could have a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp, To determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Samsung v20 display keeps going i have changed the screen cable

The plug on the screen ribbon cable which connects to the motherboard has dry solder joints. Closing the screen and typing hard on the keyboard can break these joints very easily. All you need to do is re-solder the joints. This is a very delicate job and requires a lot of patience.
