Hi,

Sorry to hear about your problem. A number of things could cause this error to appear including bad sectors on the hard drive (which will require a reformat).

Two things you can check though before getting into replacing or reformatting the drive (which will erase all of your data) are 1) Make sure the power adapter hasn't failed. A bad or incompatible adapter won't provide enough power to the drive when it tries to spin up and could cause this error. You can try a replacement after-market adapter but you'll have to match the specs in the manual. 2) You can open up the 788 and inspect the two wires connecting the disk drive to the motherboard. One is power and the other will be an IDE ribbon cable. If either is loose that could be the cause of your problem.

If you do determine that the drive is bad you'll need to remove the drive, hook it up to a PC and reformat it there. Then reinstall it in the 788 which will upon bootup automatically reformat it again with Tascam's proprietary disk format. You can optionally replace the drive. I believe Tascam's site has a list of drives which are compatible with the 788. Reformatting (or replacing) the drive will obviously cause all of your data to be lost, but should get your 788 working again (if a bad format was the problem).

One thing of note if the drive format being bad turns out to be the problem is that Firmware versions 1.07 and below have a bug which can cause bad sectors to corrupt the drive after delete operations. If you have a firmware version which is 1.07 or below you should upgrade to a newer revision or you'll risk corrupting the drive again in the future. You can get the upgrade and instructions on how to apply it here: http://www.tascam.com/products/788;9,16,132,19.html

Best of luck and hopefully it's just a loose connection or a bad power adapter.

How to burn a CD to a Pacific Digital CD RW from a Tascam Porta Studio - is it possible?

If the tascam has a digital out and you have digital inputs in an upper model sound blaster, you should be able to load the files on the computer. There are converter software pieces that will convert anything out there. Just do a search. (Load your files first.) . Short of that, record the analog output from the Tascam into a GOOD audio card with little floor noise in lossless WMA or similar and convert from there. Burn to CD last.

Whenever I turn my burner on, it just sits with the welcome sign on the screen. The drawer does not open but it sounds like it would, but it does not move. What could be wrong or what do I need to fix it?

It seems to be jammed.so if you look at the front, where you can see the button, you will find a tiny hole...so take a paper pin and insert it in the hole and the tray should come out...then you can clean it.
