as far as the false lidar readings on Valentines go, I've gotten several
before my self. I called up Valentine Research and they told me that it
occurs often near neon signs, which was the case several times. The
false is annoying, but can be alleviated by moving the unit a little. On
the other hand I've gotten some falses in the middle of nowhere Illinois
in daylight, so obviuosly, occasionally something else falses lidar also.
As far as radar bands go, I'm sure everybody with a Valentine experiences
a lot of falsing from other detectors. It's annoying, however easily
spotted by the constant signal that does not increase with a constant
distance between cars.

no falsing at all that I can attribute to other radar detectors.
However, I have recently started getting quite regular laser
falses when I exceed 6000 rpm in 1st or 2nd gear in my CRX. Has
anyone else experienced anything like this? I plan to call
Valentine tech. support, but by coincidence I happened to be
reading this first.

I find that the Valentine One falses if there is a drop in voltage of the
unit. This could happen, if you start the car, with the unit on.
There's probably an electrical problem in your vehicle.
Too bad you don't have a battery voltage gauge to tell.

: you can't screen out everything, but it seems to false a lot around
: other (unknown brand) radar detectors and 18-wheelers (I assume it's
: falsing at their radar detectors, although I've seen some rigs with
: tiny radar dishes behind the upper cowl...).
As another longtime Valentine One owner, I can say that you are not alone
in false positive signals near other detectors.
: Are those other detectors so crappy they're throwing out a lot of
: signals, or is the Valentine so sensitive it's picking up what a lot
: of other detectors wouldn't pick up?
: Usually this false signal is only a couple of bleeps long and quits
: pretty quickly. However, sometimes I get a signal so strong I'd
: assume it's a cop (it's not) and the signal *won't go away*! Is this
: a very crappy detector travelling the same direction?
I would suspect that your false signals that stick around are coming from
another detector that is following you, especially if the radar source is
to the rear.
: Are there makes of cars that use radar somehow that could be causing
: these higher strength falses? I remember GM was fooling around with
: using radar a few years ago...did they finally install it on a new
: model?
: I even got falses from the lidar yesterday - 2 of them!
I've also gotten some occasional falses on lidar. Usually they happen at
night, when travelling on lighted interstates. Since I don't think that
lidar is in use in any of the states in which I usually travel (Kentucky
and Indiana), I suspect that some combination of artificial light passing
through my windshield causes the lidar detector to false.
Usually the falses happen in bunches-- if I get one false lidar reading,
I will likely get several more before my detector calms down. It is
rather annoying at times, as there is no way to mute the lidar falses. I
suspect that some combination of climatic conditions causes natural light
to be interpreted as laser emissions by the Valentine One.
: Are these experiences normal? I know Bill Valentine reads this
: group...are you out there, Bill???
I'm not Bill, but I have been using my Valentine One regularly for over
two years now.

screaming, no matter what range you're at. This is validated with
C&D test against sensitivity to other detectors. However, having run
against a Ka signal, you will find that that Ka warning characteristics
will be very distinct when it's the real thing.
BTW, I've had Uniden detectors make the Val-1 scream up to about 7 LED
units.
K band falses... some supermarkets now use K band radar for their door
openers. You get used to it. This is where the counter is a major plus.
The Val-1 only reduces sensitivity on X and Ka in its 2 filter modes. K
band is 99% the real thing.
Maybe you should try Mike Valentine. :)
I have a Val-1 (no lidar), and love it!
