Hi there
Give the computer a little time to install the drivers for the USB mouse, it can take up to 10 mins to install.
Post back if no joy.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

I cannot get my keyboard or my mouse to work with my dell computer. what can i do?

Please add more information to get specific assistance. Are these wireless devices? If wired, do they use USB or PS/2 connections.

For wireless devices, try replacing the batteries and resynching to the receiver. (You may want to check putting the receiver in different USB ports.)

For wired devices, disconnect and reconnect. For PS/2 devices, you will need to restart the computer to check if the devices work. For USB devices, try connecting to different USB ports.

Next step, try using a different keyboard and mouse (that work on another computer (stick to USB or PS/2 to match the current pair)). Try a wired set if the problem is with a wireless pair. If those work, continue diagnostics on the wireless keyboard and mouse. Check if the mouse and keyboard work on another computer. If they don't work with another computer, replace them.

If another USB keyboard and mouse pair don't work in any port, your USB ports may have failed. Check if even one port works enough to access the Device Manager. (Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager (Win7); similar directions in other versions of Windows) Check for a problem with the drivers (For USB ports, scroll down to the USB drivers and look for a triangle with a yellow exclamation point or red x). Try to update the driver or roll it back. If that doesn't help and one USB port works, a USB hub may solve the problem.

Otherwise if the USB or PS/2 ports do not work with any devices and the driver fix doesn't work, then I'd suspect a problem with the ports on the motherboard. Replace the motherboard/computer.

I hope this helps.

I'd try to change the USB port where the receiver is connected. If this "new" port was not used yet, the windows will (re)install the drivers to make the device works in the USB port. If this doesnt work, provide us more detais (model of keyboard, e.g.)

My tower takes for ever to load and it wont read my mouse or my keyboard so my keyboard doesnt work please give me some help

Loading problems are usually due to a hard drive that is almost full, leaving windows with no "swap file" (or virtual ram). It can also be down to a very badly fragmented hard drive.

The mouse and keyboard problem ( I;m assuming you are using a Ps2 mouse and keyboard) point to a failed connector on the back panel. Try using a USB mouse and keyboard, (if you are using one already and this model supports ps2, try the other way)

If the USB ports on the computer do not work, to use a keyboard or mouse, then the problem is more serious and you may have a damaged motherboard

Usb ports not working

This can be a problem with the driver that controls your USB ports. Your drivers can be located here. Make sure they are up to date and try again. If it doesnt remedy the problem, it may be hardware related.

Hello ironside,

Some PS/2 mice do not work with a USB adapter. They are designed to work only through the PS/2 port. It could be that you have one of those. If you are using a port replicator, try instead, to plug the mouse directly to the USB with the adapter.

If that does not work, your best bet, in my honest opinion, is to purchase a USB mouse. There are many varieties available and not too expensive either. I don't recommend the wireless varieties, as they always have some problem or the other in the long run..
