Question about Microtek ScanMaker 1000XL PRO Film Scanner (35 mm), Flatbed Scanner

Open Question

Microtek 1000XL all of a sudden just scans black

I tried reinstalling the software, but it still won't scan. It's only a few months old. The lamp moves, it's lit, everything works but the image won't show up, even in overview.

mine is also a microtek scanner, but it's a 4900, same problem. light works, bar moves, but it all comes out black and garbled. The only thing I can remotely imagine as the cause was I had just attatched the light lid for scanning negatives. I had since removed it but it still shows up all black.

    I had the same problem.

Even though you can't see preview, mine still scanned the image and presented it to the application.

One of the problems was Microsoft Update. It snuck some sort of driver called "WIA USB driver" in an update and it completely supplanted the regular Microtek Pro driver.

My only solution was to start the whole install process from scratch delete Microtek and all reference to WIA drivers I could and make sure the USB port was functional.

BTW, I learned to avoid using the scanner interface (ScanMaker Pro)directly and always import from some application (Adobe, Word...etc.)instead. These extra bogus drivers show up in the import dialog when you import. Selecting those brings up a totally different user interface. Nuts, huh?

SOURCE: no image obtained on preview scanning or actual scanning

First thing to do is un install and reinstall the software. Then consider - what other software could be running the could conflict[A graphics program for example]is to try another software for scanning if available. The other thing to consider is the age of the scanner- if it is from the DOS era-95/8/ME- then it will like as not not run- there is a firmware problem. Scanners have a controller chip - DOS era devices are looking for DOS commands - and they are getting NTFS commands- various makers like Microtek tried driver fudges- but they did not work. It has to be a NTFS scanner for NTFS commands.

When you say -'normal' prescan you do mean you get an image? If this is so I would remove all software. Do a disc clean Reboot the computer Re install the original supplied software-ignore for the time being any down loaded upgrade, Come back tell me what you have

SOURCE: can't uninstall microtek 5900 scanner

This is a funny problem. Try & locate SCanwizard 5 files and delete them. Complete the registry deletion as suggested. Run scandisk. Install and uninstall Scanwizard 5.

SOURCE: green line on i900 microtek scanner too

Try checking the ribbon cable going to the scanner head, it may have a bad connection causing an error as it flexes at a certain spot.

Scanner Malfunctioning

Lines in the ourput could be because of dust on the glass, clean the glass. Dont use any solvent. Try and reinstall the software driver after removing the existing. Run Scandisk on the computer. Soem scanners cannot work continuously for long hours.

Scanner still scanning black, I don't think it was the bulb

Well, I was HOPING that your problem was simply caused by a burned-out bulb, but since you can see a BRIGHT light when you use the scanner, the bulb is WORKING, and it is NOT the cause of your problem... Unfortunately, the only other known cause of "black scans" for your Microtek S400 scanner requires you to follow a rather complicated procedure to correct the problem, so I am in the process of typing detailed instructions for you to follow. I will post them here as an addditional comment as soon as I finish typing them, and hopefully, they will help to guide you through this process. I am posting this now simply so you will know that I am still working on helping you to resolve this; according to the Microtek Knowledge Base, there are several steps you MUST follow exactly in order to eliminate the cause of the black scans, so I ask for your continued patience while I finish my research into your problem. The instructions Microtek provides seem somewhat complicated, so hopefully, the instructions I'll post here will help you to understand the steps Microtek requires you to follow to correct this problem. Again, the solution to your problem requires that you follow several specific steps (Step 1 through Step 10), in order, depending on which version of the Scan Wizard software is installed on your system, so I will post more information here that should help to guide you through the entire process. If the first solution Microtek suggests does NOT correct your problem (following Steps 1 through 10), you will have to follow Step 11 in order to complete the process of removing the Scan Wizard software. Obviously, such a multi-step process will require a good deal of patience, and attention to details, which is why I'm trying to simplify the entire process for you... I'll post the steps here as soon as I finish typing them; please read through them, and if you have any questions for me, post them here, and I will try to answer them for you BEFORE you begin following the multi-step repair process... After seeing all of the steps involved in correcting this problem, I'm thinking of changing my screen name to ScannerHater...
