Clean or repair sticking buttons on TR4500 display
I've purchase a used StarTrac TR4500 that has display problems after 2 weeks of use. The display reads KeyDN, the user manual simply suggest a reset. Is there a procedure to clean / repair a touch button display? I don't know the name of this type keypad, but, the top is a sheet of plastic with approx 10 raised areas which can be slightly depressed - not like a computer keyboard.
Re: clean or repair sticking buttons on TR4500 display
This should be a warranty issue. Sometimes the keypads fail and need to be replaced, they are not repairable. Generally you need to remove the console covers to get at them upper control board. Then you need to peel off the keypad (usually this is like a bumper sticker. There will be slots and electrical ribbons from the keypad which are inserted (pushed into) the control board. with the replacement keypad carefully insert the ribbons into the slots and stick the new pad on the console (remember you get one shot), so carefully push it down, reattach the ribbons and put the console back togethyer
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

What is the error message? The CPUs will not overclock on there own, that requires configuration. Some components when not installed properly with cause the computer to boot to a black screen and the fan to speed up dramatically. I've seen memory sticks and display port cables cause this. Check all your hardware and make sure everything is seated properly.
StarTrac 4500 Treadmill NO RPM Error
A) Damaged or misaligned RPM sensor
B) Display Cable
D) Filter Network
A) Check the connection of the RPM sensor to the lower control board. Inspect RPM sensor and disc for build up of dirt, dust, or debris. Clean if necessary. Verify RPM sensor and disc are properly aligned. Units equipped with an "optical" RPM sensor (uses plastic RPM disc) should have the disc evenly spaced between the walls of the RPM sensor. Adjust if necessary. Units equipped with a magnetic "cherry" RPM sensor (uses a metal RPM disc) should have the sensor spaced 1/8" away from the flywheel. Adjust if necessary. B) Inspect the display cable for any nicks or breaks. Replace if necessary. If there is no visible damage to the display cable, wiggle the display cable to verify intermittent connection. If by wiggling the display cable, the PWM LED on the lower control board does not flash or intermittently respond, replace the display cable.
C) Refer to the NO RPM Flowchart from the service manual for MCB testing.
D) Refer to the NO RPM Flowchart from the service manual for testing of Filter Network. Star Trac 4500 Treadmill NO RPM Error Code
The chassis needs to be sent to the engineers for inspection/repair work required as this button sticking will mean the Zapp chassis is not locked into position and may collapse during use. If it is under 2 years old return it to your retailer with proof of purchase for them to send it to the engineers under terms and conditions of the warranty. If it is over 2 years old or you do not have proof of purchase contact 01284 413 141 Mon-Fri 8.30-4.30 to book in for chargeable inspection/repair work required. Hi, I purchased the same model in November 2009. About 2 weeks ago a single horizontal line appeared. Each day another appeared until today when the video went out. Now it displays bands of vertical colored lines like a pastel colored rainbow. Did you find a solution to the problem?
The KitchenAid website states if it shows Err1 Err2 or Err3 try re-setting the power to the unit if it returns there is a problem with the electronics and Err4 is a stuck button. The Err2 is a heating element falure. Unfortunatley it may cost you more to fix than a new one. If it is less than a year old they may repair it under warranty but after a year your on your own. If you call them and complain that you have read a lot of other people online have the same problem they may repair it for you...Hope that helps.
I tried to purchase one for the $142.00 and it was not in stock. I think contaced the person someone recommended on this website. This was his answer:
It seems a lot of people are having problems with the Protron power supply. I’ve been able to repair all the ones I’ve seen so I’m confident I can fix them. I don’t sell the replacement power supply but I’ve heard about the ones on EBay. They seem to be a mishmash of two power supplies (12vdc and 24vdc) wired together with the proper connector. This should work but it just doesn’t sound very clean looking to me and they end up costing $150. I’ve been charging between $50 and $100 to repair these power supplies. My recommendation would be to send me the power supply I’ll check it out and unless it’s unusually damaged it will cost $50 plus shipping to repair. If I can’t repair it I’ll return ship it and only charge for shipping. I will guarantee the repair for 1 month. I don’t know what’s causing the power supplies to fail so I can’t guarantee it any longer than that. My feeling about the reason the Protron power supply stops working is two part; could be overheating due to lack of proper ventilation to the power supply; or the TVs power requirement is overdriving the power supply. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I repair these at my work, so here’s the shipping address: Dave Simpson 23372 South Pointe Dr. Ste. B Laguna Hills, CA 92653 Also, I’m set up for PayPal. firstname.lastname@example.org
