Question about KitchenAid Cooktops

Dead burner on kitchenaid gas cooktop?

I've got a KitchenAid KGCT305BBL 4 burner gas-on-glass cooktop and the left front burner has stopped working completely. The other three work fine. This one does nothing when I turn it's knob. Unlike the others, which you can hear the gas flowing and the snap of the electric ignitor. This one just does nothing, no sound of gas flowing, nor any snap of the ignitor. Any clues as to how to go about fixing it?

Yeah, I had already tried another knob and that didn't solve it. I should've mentioned that. I also checked and an open flame does not light it.

I re-checked it by swapping the knobs, just to be sure, and it's definitely not the knob. I also used a pair of pliers to turn the shaft. It does turn smoothly, like the others, but just doesn't work.

As a side note, I did notice that the ignitor does work with burner, but not as rapidly as the others. It sort of snaps about every second and a half instead of snap-snap-snap like the other three. The ignitors never really have worked properly. Sometimes they don't start, sometimes they won't stop, sometimes they'll snap-snap at odd intervals. But that's not the main problem.

It really does seem to be something keeping this burner from allowing gas through it.

How hard is it to clear a blocked valve? I've never disassembled a cooktop. Everything's enclosed inside a metal box underneath. I've taken apart regular gas stoves, dyers and ovens before to clean them. Just never a cooktop assembly like this one. Anything special to look out for? Besides the usual 'be careful with gas' cautions, of course. I've got tube wrenches and the like.

Hey, got it working again. Turned out it was clogged in two places. One being the bottom of the burner. There's a small hex-shaped valve down in there and it was entirely clogged. There was also something clogging the inlet side of the valve itself. The valves are very simple arrangements and it only took a bit of air blown in from the outlet side to clear it. Didn't see what was clogging it. But it's gone now and the left front burner is working fine again (such that it is, the wimpy little simmer thing that it is...)

The inside of the cooktop is remarkably simple. It took a dozen screws to get into it but once there it was a breeze. I found an exploded parts diagram of it on searspartsdirect.com and that helped ease my mind about the complexity of the process.

It is strange that you have no gas and no spark! if you held a match to the burner and turned the burner valve on it would lite di spite a failed ignitor, but for it not to lite, the burner valve[its what the knob attaches too] would have to be blocked[thats rare]or ........i got it .....the knob is broken.thats the only thing the burner valve and the spark ignitor have in common.try a knob from another burner................again.you have spark, because others are working.spark on troubled burner would work if valve blocked at orifice outlet, and if spark failed you would still get gas they work independent of each other,[but in unison].thats why im thinking knob.its the item that works both .when you turn the knob it opens the gas valve and as the gas valve rotates by turning the knob it activates or turns the spark switch so it closes the curcit allowing the electricty to the spark moduel.hey i hope that helps a little. God bless ,tom

Why not refer this issue directly to KitchenAid. Maybe they can explain the disparity between what the installation sheet shows and what you actually don't see.

I'm looking at this cooktop but all the pics show the left front burner has a giant burner cap but this one does not look like it does. Can I still get burner caps and how much are they?...

Yes. You can absolutely get burner caps for this product. I looked first at the kitchenaid website which is a wonderful resource for registering your product, getting rebate info, etc., however doing a site search for the burner caps did not yield any results. Here is their website however, for your own resource: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home//

After seaching around you can find the burner cap for this product at the larger do-it-yourself home stores such as Lowes, Home Depot, and even Sears. The price ranges from $25 to about $45. I went to bizrate.com and compared prices there.

Hope this helps

Kitchenaid 30'' low flame output

It's wasn't the perfect solution but I removed all the burner caps and cleaned each one with a tooth brush. Then using a metal trussing pin, I poked through the flame holes to clean them. Noticed better flame output from both.
