Foot pedal stops transcriber from working

When I plug in the footpedal for my Panasonic 830 transcriber, the machine won't play or rewind the tape. But it will play and rewind the tape when the foot pedal is NOT plugged in. This is a recent development, and the foot pedal model is Panasonic RP-2692. Also, when I plugged in a sony foot pedal, the transcriber had not problem playing back the tape.

SOURCE: My Panasonic RR-930 transcriber speeds

Start by cleaning the capstan roller. The rubber roller and small steel rod just above it, control the tape speed. Just a little lint, build up or animal hair wrapped around this can cause the speed to vary. Clean with alcohol and a Q-tip.

It could be the rewind solenoid is jamed up or there is a switch that comes loose under the tape deck. Either way, it will need to be serviced.

Foot pedal FF or Rewinds when pressing Play

It's possible that there's a broken wire in the cable that connects the foot control to the machine. This usually happens near the plug that plugs into the machine, or by the end that goes into the foot control.

You can usually duplicate it if you put the auto-backspace up a bit and then hold down the play pedal on the foot control. While holding down the play pedal, try moving the cable near the machine or near the foot control in a circular motion. If the machine stops, rewinds or fast forwards, then odds are that the problem is with the cable.

Foot pedal

If you cannot play, rewind or fast forward, but you hear a light "click" coming from the cassette compartment, then more than likely you have a broken drive belt, or the circuit controlling the play and/or rewind/ff mechanisms are out. In either case it sounds like you need to send it in or take it somewhere for repair.
