Hampton Bay Sussex ceiling fan motor turns on but fan won't turn

I have a Hampton Bay Sussex ceiling fan in my bedroom. I turn the switch on and I can hear the motor turn on but the fan won't turn. All of the lights work fine. It is not even 4 years old and it hasn't been used all that much, mostly in the summers. Does anyone have a solution?

You are right. Lowes told me that it would be cheaper to replace the fan. Thank you for your help.

And I would agree with them!

How about a FIxYa for the advice though? And if you have any further questions, I will be happy to respond.

If the motor hums, but the fan does not turn, check -

To see that the blades will turn freely.

If the blades turn freely, remove bottom of fan and locate the square capacitor. Note any markings, then go to a local home hardware store that sells fans and get a new capacitor. Note connections of wires, remove and replace the capacitor.

I don't agree with previous assessments. The motor may hum, but if it doesn't spin, it is locked up. Most probably a bearing (there are 2, 1 at each end of armature. probably a 6202Z. Very common bearing for ceiling fans of all makes. You can get them in most major metro areas at a bearing distibutor for 8 - 10 bucks or at ebay for $1.69 - $2.50 per bearing plus tax and including shipping. I just got 2 new ones for a total of $6.62 delivered in 3 days. Depend on how savvy you are with tools etc. It's not rocket science but I can understand that some people don't have a clue. No offense. I'm old and don't understand today's computers all that well. Ceilng fans are analog technology.

Sounds like you have a broken motor bearing cause the armature to not spin correctly even though the motor is spinning. If the Armature is not spinning then the motor will only spin. To be honest with you it would be cheaper to replace the fan then to try and repair it. The price you pay for the parts and for a technician is going to be expensive. If you are capable of doing this yourself you are going to need to take it off the ceiling and take the fins off and then get to the bearing and see if it looks like something you can fix. Then go to Lowes, Home Improvement or local appliance store and find the new bearing. Good luck

These fans are sold by Home Depot and you can download the instructions from their site. They show two versions. Here's the link for one with etched glass, and here's the one with three separate lights.

Motor will barely run

If it's when you set the remote on med or high, check to make sure the switch on the fan isn't set on low. Turn the remote to high and pull the chain switch to see if it goes faster. Someone may have tried to turn it on or off with the chain, forgetting about the remote. Good luck.

The distribiution of the wiring normaly all the black wires should be connected to a black wire line, before the switches, then each switch individually will activate iether the lights or the fan motor.

Hampton Bay remote (023617) turns on wrong fan

Program it to match the receiver's programming in the fan body:
In both the remote (transmitter) and receiver in the fan is a small (about half inch square) DIP switch (Dual In-line Package switch) that has four small sliding switches on it. The pattern of the switch positions must be the same on the transmitter's switch as the receiver's switch for the remote to work (it puts them on the same frequency). There should be an instruction booklet that comes with the remote telling you where exactly the transmit and receive DIP switches are

My Hampton Bay ceiling fan runs only on one speed..used to work fine...is it the capacitor?

no , if the capacator is bad no speeds will work and the fan will only hum .... if you have a remote control model the control unit is bad .if you have a pull switch most of the time its not the switch but a bad electrical connection to the switch , remove the cover, pull down the wires and go through them one by one looking for a loose or broken connection (turn power off first) . if nothing you might try a new pull switch , its cheep . .past that your stuck ,you may just have a bad motor and there is nothing you can do but replace the fan good luck .......Please if this answer helped , please rate this 3 or 4 stars . and keep me in the paid answer department . A 1 or 2 may knock me down into the unpaid ranks. Thanks Cactus Bob

HI speed on my Hampton Bay ceiling Fan.

If you are looking to lower your fan speed, I suggest getting an adjustable wall switch that will limit the current to the settings. I have the same situation, I myself didn't do it but I know it is possible. In my bedroom, I have my ceiling fan wired to a turn knob switch, a dimmer so to speak, that limits the elctrical current, thus slowing the rpm's of the fan blades.
