I also encountered this problem. I eventually disconnected the battery and that did the trick. You may also want to try connecting it to an external power source (in your car).
To disconnect the battery, after removing the two tiny torx screws, I used a well worn putty knife to very carefully pry the back off. The putty knife had sharp edges.
