Question about MSI K8MM-V Motherboard

No display or startup!

I turn the system on and no display! Power supply fires up, processor fan fires up, but the hard drive does not. I hooked up a different hard drive and it does the same thing. But!, if I unhook the ribbon cable from the hard drive it will spinup. I get no error beeps of any kind. Could you please tell me what the problem is?

    Could not find a jumper for clear cmos, did try replacing the battery. Did replace the ribbon cable, still have the same problem!

Hi there
Try another ribbon cable and clear the cmos >>> No display or startup! - cce5f1a.jpgmove the plastic jumper to the other position, and turn the machine on, if nothing happens, you have cleared the cmos, put the jumper back in its original position and see it the PC boots.

    one more thing to check is system memory, take it out turn the machine on, if it beeps the processors working ok and you know its the memory. If it doesn't then the motherboard has probably failed.

Red hard drive light and fan continuously running


Let's diagnose from your statements;

A) No display on monitor

B) Harddrive activity LED is on

C) Fan keeps running. Assume your reference is to the computer case fan. IMHO if it was a reference to the Processor fan, you would have stated so.

D) Power Supply changed. Assumption is that it is KNOWN to be good......

A1) Following a diagnostic flowchart, you would rule out the possibilities of a problem, one by one, and step by step.

No display on the monitor can mean a lot of things, however with the additional information we can narrow it down further....

B1) The Harddrive activity LED is on. The way you made the statement, makes me think you are referring to it is CONSTANTLY on.

Reason?
Harddrive is in an endless loop. BIOS is trying to find the Boot record on the Harddrive.
However for some reason it isn't finding it.

C1) Fan keeps running....
This leads me more to believe the reference is now, to the Processor Fan.
Processor fan running at high speed.

D1) When someone states they 'Changed' the Power Supply, instead of Replaced the Power Supply, this leads me to believe the reference is to another Power Supply that was laying around, and not a new Power Supply.

Therefore makes me want to ask;
"How do you know the Power Supply is indeed good?
All 3 main voltage power rails are good?
3.3 Volt, 5 Volt, and 12 Volt? (DC)"

A Power Supply with a weak voltage power rail, will show the symptoms you are seeing.
Why?

1) If ALL of the LED's (Light Emitting Diode) were on at once, they would use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts of power.

3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 130 Watts of power.
Just depends on what Processor it is.

No Processor running, no 'Brain'
No 'Brain' running, no computer.

You press the Power On button. This plastic assembly then presses against a Power On switch, located inside it.

The Soft Power On circuit is activated. This 'excites' the Power Supply, and turns it on.
The first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset.
The Basic Input/Output System program is initialized.

BIOS looks to see what devices are connected, does a Ram Memory count, TURNS THE PROCESSOR ON, and hands the computer over to the Operating System.
(In this case the O/S is some version of Windows)

Processor is NOT turning on. No 'brain' operating to find the Boot record on the Harddrive.
Harddrive spins in an endless loop.

Power Supply is KNOWN to be good? Came out of a working computer?
Power Supply is a new one?
Still doesn't mean it is good. Test the 3 main voltage power rails, with a multimeter.

Assuming the Power Supply IS indeed good......

Clean out the inside of the computer.
Replace the Thermal Paste on the Processor (CPU)
Make SURE you are following Anti-Static Procedures.
[The CPU (Processor) is the MOST susceptible hardware component to Static shock ]

However, after replacing the Thermal Paste, do not plug the Power Supply into power.

Press the Power On button in, and hold in for a count of 10 seconds.
Let go.
Do this procedure 2 more times.
What you are doing is clearing CMOS Error Codes, and resetting BIOS Setup back to the factory default settings.
The former matters, not the latter. Just telling you the 'whole story'.

NOW plug the Power Supply into power. WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.

Need guidance in replacing the Thermal Paste on the Processor (CPU)?
Post the computer manufacturer name, and model number.
The Model Number can be found on the Back of the computer, or up on the side of the computer tower.

My custom built computer has a the m7vig400 installed and i can't formatt my new harddrive because the fan on top of my processor will not come on why ? it came on with a 16 head hard drive how do i...


First, make sure you plug the power from the fan back into the motherboard & try it again. Did you do anything else besides just pulling out your old hard drive & putting the new one in? The CPU fan is completely independent of the CPU fan. You can start up you system without ANY hard drives & the CPU fan will come on if it's plugged in & the power supply is working etc. If you make sure the fan is plugged in correctly & the fan still doesn't come on, I suggest you temporarily put your old hard drive back in & firing things up. I'm sure you will find that the fan still doesn't work.

All that said, if the CPU fan isn't working (& everything else is), then it's a bad fan or motherboard. It's not necessarily a bad motherboard. Sometimes there are jumpers that control that sort of thing. I'm not sure exactly what that motherboard does. I have had this exact motherboard for years & as long as the fan is plugged in (& the power supply is working), when you start things up, the fan comes on.

One last thought, try flipping the power supply switch in the back to reset the power supply before you press the button in the front. Good luck...

When I push the startup button, the green light turns on the cooling fan start's just for an instent and shuts down. Even the Green light on the back of the computeris now turnes off. Any idea's to fix...

When you press the plastic Power On button, it in turn presses against a Power On switch.
The Power On switch is located inside the plastic Power On button.

This is an example of a generic ATX Power On switch,

The switch completes a circuit.
(The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch. Makes a brief contact, then opens back up)

The circuit the Power On switch completes, is the 5 Volt Standby circuit.
When a Power Supply is plugged into power, there is a constant 5 Volts (DC) present.
Closing this 5 Volt Standby circuit, momentarily 'excites' the Power Supply, and turns the Power Supply on.

Power goes to the Motherboard, and Peripherals, (Harddrive, optical drive/s, and so on)
The first chip to receive power is the BIOS chip.
(Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C. Integrated Circuit)

The BIOS program on the BIOS chip, looks to see what devices are installed, does a Ram Memory count, TURNS the Processor on, and hands the computer over to the O/S.
(O/S = Operating System. Windows XP is one example of an O/S)

Your Power Supply doesn't even have enough power to light those LED lights, much less turn the Processor on.

A) ALL the LED lights together, use less than 1 Watt of power.

B) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

C) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is. (Older Processors use less than 51 Watts)

If this problem is in reference to a Compaq Presario SR5130NX desktop computer, it comes with an Athlon 64 X2 - 3800+ Processor.

(Windsor Core. Also this Processor uses an AM2 processor socket)

Fans start to spin, and the LED power light is on for the Power Supply. When it's time to turn the Processor on, too much power is needed, and the Power Supply 'drops to it's knees'.

The Power Supply used is just a common ATX style of power supply. (Actually it is an ATX 12V 2.x)
Used in a LOT of personal computers out there, and is readily available.
It's a 300 Watt unit.

(The ATX form factor for this Power Supply, (Size and shape), is approximately 6 inches Long, 6 inches Wide, and 3-1/2 inches Tall)

Power cables from the Power Supply needed are;

A) 24-pin ATX main power cable (Main power cable to motherboard)

B) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, (Also known as P4)

C) At least one SATA power cable for the SATA harddrive, and additional SATA power cables, for each SATA optical drive.

(Your Presario may have come with SATA optical drive/s, or IDE {PATA} optical drive/s. Optical drive = CD/DVD drive)

D) If your Presario came with IDE, (Also known as PATA), optical drives, you'll need a standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable, for each drive.

E) The computer case fans, may each use a standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable. (The Processor fan attaches to the Motherboard)

F) The Memory Card Reader needs a Floppy Drive power cable. An auxiliary power cable.

OPTIPLEX 960 error codes 1 and 3 at startup. Both numbers and power button are amber blinking. Doesn't boot. Nothing on screen. Please help auntie.


Blinking amber ... seems like an isuue with the power supply .. check if you see the power supply fan spinning at the back of the system tower... If its spinning then you could try reseating the memory modules inside the system tower . Opem the tower and then disconnect the green colour ruler shapped modules which has a latch on either sides. then try turning in the system ... check if turns on properly.

Condition Code Service Actions Processor thermal protection activated. Power LED blinks red twice, once a second, followed by a two second pause.
  1. Make sure the computer air vents are not blocked and that the cooling fan is running.
  2. Open the hood, press the power button, and see if the processor fan spins. If the fan is not spinning, make sure the fan cable is plugged into the cable header on the system board, and that the fan is properly installed and seated.
  3. If the fan is plugged in and seated properly, but is still not spinning, replace the processor fan.
  4. Reseat the processor heatsink and make sure the fan assembly is attached to the heatsink properly.
Processor is not installed. Power LED blinks red three times, once a second, followed by a two second pause.
NOTE: This condition indicates a missing or improperly installed processor, not a defective one.

Make sure there is a processor in the system. Reseat the processor and verify that it is installed properly. Power failure (power supply is overloaded) Power LED blinks red four times, once a second, followed by a two second pause.
  1. Check the voltage selector, located on the rear of the power supply, is set to the correct voltage (the correct setting depends on the region).
  2. Open the hood and make sure the 4-wire power supply cable is fully connected to the power connector on the system board.

System does not power on. No beeps or blinks since the system is not functioning. Press and hold the power button for less than four seconds. Perform the following steps depending on whether the hard drive LED turns green.

If the hard drive LED turns green, then:

  2. Remove the expansion cards one at a time until the 3.3V auxiliary light on the system board turns on. If removing a card turns the light on, replace the card and then see if the system works.

If the hard drive LED does not turn green, then:

  1. Make sure the computer is plugged into a functioning AC power outlet.
  2. Open the hood and make sure the power button is securely fastened in the power harness and that the harness is connected properly to the power connector on the system board. In other words, make sure that the power button is making contact with the power circuit.
  3. Make sure the power supply cables are connected properly to the power connectors on the system board.
  4. Check to see if the 3.3V auxiliary light on the system board is not turned on, replace the power supply. **
  5. Replace the system board.*

When I turn it on, only the fans run. I cannot hear the hard drive run and the hard drive light on the bezel is solid yellow


look on bios to see if detects the hard drive ...if does not boot to windows...the hard disk has no reason to go on ....and the issues could be many ....check the Ram memory if do not appear anything on screen at all ...and just runs the coolers and clicks without boot at all...in this case its the Ram memory ...so check it ...get it out ..put it back ...and remove the bios battery to force it see them again .....if it is booting until the operating system should appear ...and after that nothing ...reinstall ...
Also .....if there is anything written on the screen ..read carefully ..usually it will say whats wrong ...and advise in same issues..like replace hdd ...or files missing ...or blue screen error from memory issues..

This could still possibly be a bad power supply, even if the fans and drives spin up. If you have a spare try hooking it up.

the list of things that can cause this are:

bad power supply
bad ram
IDE error (optical or hard drive problem)
bad card (modem, video card etc.)
bad processor
bad board

The first thing i would look for in this case is blown capacitors. Those are the little things on the board that look like little soup cans, usually with silver tops. If the tops of any of them are bulging or have junk leaking out of them, you have a bad board. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can try to replace them. Not sure if radio shack still sells caps, but they are easy to find on line. I have about an %80 success rate fixing boards in this way.

If the PS change doesn't work, then try it with different sticks of RAM, if you have more than one, pulling one at a time until it starts or you've tried it with all the ram. If not ram, disconnect the ide cables from the board, these are the wide ones usually connected to the HD's and optical drives. If it still doesnt start then pull all the cards. If it doesnt start then, try swapping processor and if still no joy a new board.

Acer veriton M460 will not boot up


The acer veriton m460 has three faulty capacitors. Check and see if you have bulgy capacitors. I have ten of these computers and all have three blown capacitors.

Intel PC wont boot past startup and keeps shutting down unless I disconnect the cooling fan, let it start and then reconnect the fan


hi,

might have to get a higher wattage power supply,
the initial amperage draw plus everything else may be causing the stock power supply volts to dip past the limit
maybe download the intel active monitor and study that, or hook up a voltmeter and watch the output at startup.

Barebones troubleshooting


Lex -

I would first check your ram, make sure its the right type and rating for the motherboard. Although most systems will beep at post for a memory issue, sometimes reseating the memory alone can clear up a startup hang.

If the memory is seated okay, the right type and speed rating, try using a different video card in the system. Its possible that the system is starting up normally, but not being displayed.

If neither of those help, minimize the system. Plug in just the bare minimum needed for operation - Power supply, processor, heat sink & fan, a single memory stick, a single hard drive, video card(if its not integrated on the motherboard). Plug in a monitor and the power cord, then see if the system boots.

If all that still fails, verify that the CPU fan AND the Power Supply fan are spinning when power is on. If so, this points to either a bad memory stick(try another), bad processor(if available, try one at a slower or faster speed), or bad motherboard.
