Err CF then Err 99 - Canon Rebel XT / Hitachi 4GB Mircodrive

My Hitachi 4GB Microdrive CF card was full. I ordered new (refurbished) ones online. When I put one in my camera the screen read "Err CF". From the menu I selected format > ok. Screen read "Err 99". I tried another one of the new cards, same thing. I put my old CF card back in and deleted a few photos to make room to take more pictures. Everything worked normal. Placed the new refurbished ones back in and got the errors.

I have taken the lens off. The battery out. The CF card out. Let the camera sit for 20 or more minutes with all of those items out and systematically replaced them and checked if I got the errors. I was sure to use a fully charged battery. I only got the errors when I used one of the new CF cards. I have cleaned all the sensors. Checked for bent pins. I can't think of anything else.

I then returned CF cards to the seller (whom I have bought the exact same thing from in the past and not had a problem) for a replacement. While I was waiting for the replacement cards I ordered a few other CF cards from a different seller. I got them today. Same problem, same errors. Tried all of the same things again and same results.

Is it possible that ALL the cards are faulty? Is there a setting on the camera that I have set that prohibits formatting of the CF cards that I am not aware of? If the model number is the same on all the cards is it possible that they are versions that are not compatible with this camera?

Any ideas welcome. Thanks.

Nope, this is not card anymore.

As you know CF is card failure, sometimes this cause to start error 99 , that is lens error , even if there is no problem with the lens.

This happens because the built in software in the camera can get messed up after an error CF.

You fix the problem calling Canon, they will guide through upgrading the firmware in your camera.

First ensure that you are using the camera menu and command to format the new card, and that new cards are properly inserted into the machine.

Call Canon support to get a firmware upgrade.

Not all CF cards are created equally, so yes, it could be your batch of cards. To determine if the error is CF related, and not anything else, try the following steps which are used to diagnose err 99's

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could means several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:

Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thanks for choosing Fixya!

I get an Err CR inmy Canon EOS Rebet XT-Bad card?

  1. Test the CF card on your computer or another camera. If it works fine then it may not be the card. Make sure the card is not UDMA, 4GB or more in memory size since those new big cards are not compatible with the older cameras.
  2. Look inside the CF port. Make sure that none of the contacts that connect the camera and CF card are bend of smashed flat. If so then the camera will have to be send off for repair. This is a rather expensive repair, $250 is not uncommon.
  3. I it is neither of these then take the camera to a local camera shop and ask them to look at it. It may need to be sent off, but testing another brand card, or resetting the camera or checking for physical defects couldn't hurt at this point.

Canon Rebel xt does not accept CF cards for no apparent reason

It sounds like a bent pin in the CF slot. This is not a do it yourself fix. Take it to a repair shop.

Rebel XT will not work with new faster CF cards.

Check the volume and speed of memcard, maybe it is not compatible. error 99 is an indication that a lens or shutter curtain is not working, so i cant see any connection with the memcard problem. Check your camera memcard compatibility.
