Check to see if you have a card reader or a usb plugged into the laptop. That is what usually gives you the errors.

Hopefully if you have all your files backed up, perform a System Recovery with your operating system, or better yet, You may restart your laptop and tapping F8 at the same time, perform a system recovery thru the Safe Mode.It may be a corrupted software with the "boot.vis"
file.??This is the best i can do without seeing your laptop.

Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards.<br />2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds.<br />3. What is the base system device on my Dell laptop?


A base system device is any hardware device pre-installed on your laptop, such as a CD-rom drive, a USB port, an Ethernet port, video card, etc. These devices all require pre-installed drivers that were supplied by Dell with the factory setup. The most common problem is to have one of these driver files corrupted or deleted by accident. To solve a base system device driver problem, you have to go into Windows Device Manager (Look in Control Panel), and look for devices listed with yellow question marks or other indications that they have a missing driver. You either then go to the Dell support site for your laptop model, or the driver disk you may have gotten with your laptop, and reinstall the needed driver.

Using the F12 Diagnostics
* Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
* The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
* If the Pre-boot System Assessment completes successfully, you receive the message Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
* Press any key to continue
* Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the Diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive
* After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want to run -
Express Test = Performs a quick test of devices. The test typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part
Extended Test = Performs a thorough check of devices. The test typically takes 1 hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically
Custom Test = Tests a specific device. You can customize the tests to be run
Symptom Tree = Allows you to select tests based on a symptom of the problem you are experiencing
* When you have finished running a test, close the screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and reboot the computer, close the Main Menu screen

May be that the driver is damage, search by internet some driver tune, as also in the web page of Dell for this Vostro 1015.

Base system device and network controller driver error in device manager at win XP


"Base System Device" is your card reader, I had the same problem. If you dont use it jst disable the device, otherwise the drivers should be on your alienware Master CD, if not get a tech support guy to send 'em to you.

The last problem to conquer


base system device could be the audio on the motherboard or the audiocard itself. go to the page that has system devices and find your audio and supported devices and see if the latest driver is available. when you repaired the connector, I take it you had to pretty much remove everything to get to the board connector. could it be you didn't reconnect a connector? those thin film flat cable connectors can be a pain.

Clean the recovery CD if you are using one.

If the recovery runs from the hard drive you may have a failing hard drive.
