Question about Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Maytag dryer performing inconsistantly

3 yr old heavily used dryer now only works adequately about 1/3rd of time
other times it tumbles with NO heat or very low heat even on highest settings (used to be too hot @ this high setting!)
had repair man out who checked for adequate ventilation ,cleaned filter etc & could not find anything wrong
he did NOT replace anything & (no surprise!) the problems remain
I have a few months left on my warranty & want to be proactive in getting the necessary replacemnt part(s) for more consistant & higher heat.
As the repairman seemed clueless re troubleshooting ideas I need your help with suggestions of poss problem & how to fix
Cheers

You either need a new heating element or you are not getting full 240 volts, im assuming its electric here. check your outlet to make sure both leads are hot.

You may want to contact a professional that will have the diagrams for your machine online. there are some here or you can go to another site. like (Just answer.) Be more specific about your problem. It can be fixed . There's no worries.

Are you saying that it does not heat up either ?In addition with not tumbling clockwise ?

Disconnect the dryer first. You can remove the top and front of the dryer to check to see what is happening. If it does not heat . You may need to replace the temperature control relay. If that does not work , the heating elements themselves may need to be replaced.

For the tumbling problem, they also have relay switches that go out.
BUT, if it is tumbling to one side and keeps tumbling then that will probably be enough to dry your clothes. As long as it is not too heavily loaded.

the first thing you should do is clean out any lint in the exhaust side of the venting area. it could be overheating from that and shutting the heat off too soon.. on an electric dryer the heater part either works or it doesnt. element should be fine in this case i suspect..

Hello this will be a bit of an odd question at first but have you ever dlinted your dryer? Just as your dryer vent does get a build up of lint the dryer does as well. Click this link to view a tip I wrote http://www.fixya.com/support/r8732702-prolong_life_dryer the most important area to clean is where the blower goes into and you get at this area by removeing the rear panel of the dryer if your dryer is a type like whirlpool, kenmore, maytag all dryer need to be dlinted at least once per year to maintain the dryers ability to dry. If I am able to bring a 45 year old dryer back to life by doing this you should have no problem If you have any questions message me back this will require also the tub being removed as well but I can guarantee if the air is unrestricted the heat is able to travel unblocked and it doesnt cause blown thermistors as well . Thanks Rick

Will not dry

Does it get hot?
Dryers have 3 functions to perform:
Tumbling
Air flow
Controlled heat
Test for each, and fix the one that is not functioning. Remove vent tube to test for air flow.

Yes - the vent exhausts humid air, and draws IN fresh dry air. So the humid air is staying trapped in your unit.

Dryer won't heat up! It tumbles fine, but no heat! My Maytag dryer is only two or three years old!

This problem is normally caused by a faulty thermostat and or heating element. Test and replace if needed

Not heating properly, many cycles to dry loads

Check the following to address this issue--

Note: Normal drying time for a dryer is about 45 minutes (some may take up to an hour).

1. Venting
Make sure the dryer vent hose, as well as the rest of the vent duct, is not clogged.

Unless regular maintenance is performed, chances are there is a lot of lint accumulated inside the dryer. This might affect the drying time and could be a fire hazard. Make sure to have your dryer cleaned regularly. Because this might involve taking most of the dryer apart, it is recommended to have a qualified appliance repairman perform this task.

2. Thermostat
There are a couple of cycling thermostats inside the dryer. If one of them breaks down, it might affect the dryer's performance. Replace the defective thermostat.

3. Heating element
A heating element might only be partially burned out, in which case it would still work but will take longer time to dry the clothes. Replace the element if found defective.

Warning! To avoid personal injury or even death, always disconnect your appliance from its power source--that is, unplug it or break the connection at the circuit breaker or fuse box--before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your appliance. Also, because some components may have sharp edges, use caution while working on your appliance.

Gas dryers aren't very complicated. Here are some common symptoms you may experience with your dryer.
