Acer laptops feature on-board microphones for sound recording purposes within Windows.
Since an internal microphone can be a very handy tool for communication and speech-to text capabilities, working without a functional mic can severely hinder work flow for many users.
If you do not have any prior knowledge of how to repair a non-functional microphone within Windows, you may feel the need to send off your Acer laptop for repair.
There is no need, because even the most novice Acer user can do it.

Go to "Start," "Control Panel," then double-click on "Add/remove Programs."
Click on the "Windows Setup" tab, "Multimedia," then select "Details."

Choose "Sound Recorder" from that screen, then click "OK."
The Sound Recorder application will begin to run. Step 4 will begin the microphone test.

Click "Record," which is the circle located on the right side of the user interface.
If you hardware device is functional, you should see the recording display begin to move.

Press "Stop," "Rewind," then "Play" to verify the audio that has been recorded.
If you are able to hear what the microphone picked up, but are having trouble hearing the microphone's input within other software, refer to the software's manual about proper configuration of the device.
If you were unable to record with your Acer microphone in Sound Recorder, continue to next Step.

Scroll your mouse over to the bottom-right corner of your computer screen and then double-click on the small speaker icon.
Slide the microphone volume slider all the way to the top and make sure that there hasn't been a mute check-box selected.
If you are still experiencing error while recording with your Acer laptop's built-in microphone, you most likely have faulty hardware that needs to be replaced by Acer directly.

Use the following best practices to capture sound more easily.
  1. Adjust the notebook screen to place the microphone in the best direction for receiving sound.
  2. Click Start , enter sound in the search field and select Sound Recorder from the list.
  3. Click Record and speak into the microphone. Save the file to an easily-accessible location, such as the desktop.
  4. To play back the recorded sound, open the file using Windows Media Player.
  5. When using the internal microphone, choose an environment without background noise.
  6. If the recorded sound does not play back, continue to the next section of this document.

On my i mac i can talk on skype thru my headphones but it wont let me talk without them, so was wondering what went wrong?It was working before..

holding option while clicking on the volume icon (speaker) will bring up a small menu, make sure the 'input device' is the internal microphone.
if that doesn't work go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input and select Internal microphone, it might need to be turned up. From that screen it can be tested to make sure it's functioning and picking up sound

Can't find microphone on dell latitude D410 to skype

Checked on the Latitude D410 and it does not have a internal microphone ... the microphone connector is located on the right side of the laptop near the back ... you will need to purchase a separate mic to get this functionality ... these are fairly cheap to purchase
