Car Radio bench test procedure and special equipment???

I want to bench test a radio before putting it in my car. It is for a Jag and a major pain to take apart the dash and I have the code for the radio. How can I be sure it works?
I have a 12 volt power supply and a 3.5 amp power supply,
test meter but don't know how to attach a speaker, whether I need to rig an antenna, and I am willing to pay for a clear diagram and instructions on how to do this .....

    The actual radio for a Jag in the year in question is a Clarion radio with 6 speakers, built in amp, and cassette player. My problem is that I want to set up a way to test a replacement on my test bench.
    I have a 12 Volt power source, a 3,5 amp power source but do I need to set up an antenna and how do I arrange a ground wire? ground to what?
    Ideally I am willing to pay for a sketch to get this et up properly. I have a test meter, volts/ohms etc .
    Solving the test bench picture above will let me test the radio without taking apart the dash on a Jag twice...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Could you post back the exact model of the Alpine radio/head unit pls? It would also help if you know what was originally installed in your vehicle, if there is an external amp and how many speakers are currently installed. Some high end vehicles also uses the car radios/stereos for alphanumeric displays, might this also be in your car's model?

Would appreciate postback. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

    Appreciate the post back. Without a specific model, what I can provide are the commonly used color of the wiring of Clarion models. Pls refer to the wiring diagram below.

    White = Left Front +
    White/Black = Left Front –

    Gray = Right Front +
    Gray/Black = Right Front –

    Green = Left Rear +
    Green/Black = Left Rear-

    Violet = Right Rear +
    Violet/Black = Right Rear –

    Yellow 14ga = Battery Main/Memory
    Yellow 18ga = Battery CeNET Power/Memory
    Red = Accessory (ignition on)
    Black = Ground
    Blue = Antenna Turn On +
    Blue/White = Remote Turn On (amps) +
    Orange/White = Dimmer
    Brown = Phone Mute
    Orange or Mint Green= Parking Brake Video Lockout
    White/Red = CCD (camera) input instant on +

    RCA Cables:
    Gray = Front Output
    Black = Rear Output
    Purple = Non-Fade or Subwoofer Output

    Incidentally, for an antenna any piece/length of wire (plugged into the antenna port) would serve the purpose of bench testing. The ground is also the black wire which normally is connected to the chassis of the radio.

Can original touchscreen radio of 2002 jaguar x-type be replaced with newer touch screen radio

i think you can but you should check with your jag dealer to be sure, it will also need programming to the car using jag diagnostic equipment, because it is a module on the can network and the pats security system will not recognise it as belonging to the car and wont allow you to start the engine. hope this answers your question. cheers.

I got a 91 chevy pick up with a cilfford, the radio works but hardly any sound comes out of speakers. I got a new radio and its the same. All speakers play buy sound is very low. I was told it was do to...

posted 6 times.
run new wires from new radio to speakers
or bench test your radio (easy) with your speakers.
if still low the speakers are bad or just dirt cheap , car speakers.
try new speakers, if weak now the wires are bad, try new wires
id still weak the radio is bad. (or just a cheap radio)
and define weak, to me most radios are way too load.
but to others, all are weak until 1000watt amp is added.
weak is a relative term. as is hardly any.
do not quote persons guessing, its just a wild guess. they can see car either, do the tests your self and find TRUTH.

to bench test, (modern way)
1: 12vdc 1amp power pack, or battery 12v. and ground.
2: connect up USB mem,. with some mp3s. on stick.
3: connect one good speaker (KNOWN GOOD)
to one of 4 speaker lines. (2 wires)
4: push play, does it sound good, yes, move to next speaker port.
ok , the radio is good. so
try it in the car, is it now low volumn
yes, then move that test speaker to the car speaker that is low.
still low, yes, then the wiring is bad.

easy huh?,,, takes only , a test speaker.

if no usb use, cassette, if no that , use CDDA disk( store bought real)
if none of that us the radio to test. connect a test antenna.
tune in Am or fm. bam.

Why my radio turns on and off

when my BMW ash trays are full , i buy a new car.
1: bad fuse, (loose or cracked)
2: bad radio wires connections.
3; bad radio. (we bench test the radio to prove that)

Ticking noise from radio while engine is running. Ticking increases speed while driving

Your radio is picking up interference from the ignition. There are various means of suppressing this, from special ignition leads, to capacitors at the distributor and igniter. You would be best to take the car to an auto electricians' and ask them to fix it, as they have the testing equipment.

whenever you do a repair on wiring that has been altered assume the worse, most often its from someone trying to fix it on the cheap , damaging units then bringing it in and claim all was well before, i always start from scratch, test radio on the bench to make sure it works first, then retrace all wiring, you never know what damage sommeone else has done

I have an issue.. my battery died yesterday the guy who jumped my car messed up and attached the jumper cables wrong on his battery. Now my kenwood excelon ddx 7015 wont turn on at all do you think it is...

Hello Melissa,

The first thing I would check is if your fuse is okay. If your fuse is blown replace and try to turn on the radio. If the fuse is good have the radio taken out and have it bench tested. take the power wire and the memory wire put them together and apply power to them then take the black wire and connect it to ground if the radio turns on then its okay and he fried something else. If the radio doesn't turn on then chances are that he fried it.

You can use a car battery to test your radio or a portable boost jumper.

Hope this helps you.
