Look on the right side where the cartridge goes, if the spring on the right is hanging loose it might have poked a hole in the ribbon cable at the rear near the contacts. If so it's time for a new printer, if OK, check the exp. date on the ink cartridge and if it's been refilled or a generic ink you may just need another one.
Trick Brother HL 5170DN printer into think there is toner left. Rather than run out for a new toner cartridge use a small (.5 x .5 in.) piece of black electrical tape to cover the sensor hole on the non-gear side of the cartridge. By covering the hole the printer is fooled into thinking the hopper is full of toner.
If there is a spring loose on the right side where that cartridge goes, it may have poked a hole in the ribbon cable when that happens you have to replace the carriage assembly. Sometimes this machine lies and you really need to change the cartridge on the left. Take out the left. cart. and see if the error changes.
Sounds like the carriage is broken on the black side. Pull the cartridge out and take a look at the silver metal piece. Is it loose from the side and if so did it punch a hole in the circuitry that cartridge comes in contact with. If I were a betting man this is probably your problem. You have to replace the whole carriage. This is a pretty common problem with the carriages that use the #96 and #97 cartridges.
To open the printer, just above the front control panel you use both hands & pull upwards. The whole top of the printer will open up. The ink cartrifges will be close to the center of the opening. The printer should be on for this. There are two ink cartrages. The one with the black lid is for your black ink. There is a small tab in front of the cartridge lid. Push down on the tab & the lid will open. Remove the old ink. Remove the tape that is protecting the the bottom & copper back side of the new ink. Place the ink into the printer. The copper back that runs from the bottom & up the back side about 3/4" goes into the printer cartridge. The colored ink goes into the other cartridge holder, it's lid is blue. Again press the tab just in front of the lid & it will pop open. Repeat the above removing the protective tape & install the ink.
The ptinter will want to run either a test page or allignment page or both. You will need your manual. If you do not have your manual you can download it from this site. Click the link below. http://www.retrevo.com/search/v2/jsp/downloadPage.jsp?doc=f7f0a21c03aee016b79da0cdbb74cf9f&q=Lexmark+X5470

try to install again but this time make sure you follow the manual especially on step 5,6 and 7
I list down again the step from the manual
Load the new roll of print ribbon on the cartridge.
? Put the full spool of ribbon on the supply spindle
of the ribbon cartridge. Push until the spool
clicks onto the spindle.
? Put the empty take-up spool on the spindle with
the solid black gear. Push until the spool clicks
onto the spindle.
Replace the loaded ribbon cartridge in the printer.
? Make sure both spindles rest in the black
supports on the left side of the printer.
? Make sure the ribbon cartridge handle rests in
the supports on the right side of the printer.
? Make sure to install the full, new spool toward
the card tray of the printer.
Close the printer cover. Press down firmly to latch it.
op the ink cartridge protective door located above the ink cartridges. remove both cartridges.
look at the white ribbon cable that connects to each cartridge. You will see gold dotted connections. look closely for a small hole in the cable . This hole is caused by the spring that holds the cartrdges in. Sometimes people force the cartridge in puncturing this ribbon cable. It is a poor design by HP . The error code will usually say ink cartridge door not closed. Unfortunately the assembly is fairly difficult to replace and can cost as much as to printer. If you bought new cartridges, buy asimilar unit which uses the same cartridges.
Then at least its not a total loss. Scrivitron
