Can't Configure Display in RH7.0

By Janice - usenet poster

Hi,
I installed on my second hard drive RH7.0 and I am unable to configure
the display to startx. Using Xconfigurator I tried all possible configurations,
none will work. The screen turns either black and everything hangs and I have
to go out via Ctrl-Alt Del or the screen shows a very washy flimmering display
and then hangs. Using XF86Setup installed from RH6.2 will not work either it starts
up and then is showing only a large X as if one enters x only. I then copied the
settings of XF86config file of RH6.2, nothing doing. The same when I copied the
settings of XF86config file from Slackware7.1, nothing doing.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Peter

Is your video card being properly detected by Xconfigurator ? The
configuration file from RH 6.2 won't work coz of the changes in XFree86.
If you know the video card details (make, chipset, VRAM) and the monitor
horizontal and vertical refresh rates try using the 'xf86config' tool
from the text mode. It gives you a greater flexibility than
Xconfigurator. Btw which graphics card are you using ?

Thanks Jims, that figures why I can't configure X with RH7.0. Your info saves
me a lot of time. I suspected that this distro is at fault.

Regards

For what it's worth, I have an early Diamond Speedstar Pro, and with
Redhat ever since version 5.something, I have had no trouble getting
some form of X to work with it. Now, with 7.1, I can't get it to
do anything. I've tried all the listed Speedstar options, as well
as the generic VGA stuff - nothing works. So for now I'm using an
X server on my WINDOWS machine and accessing Linux that way (ouch).

It's known that RH70 has some buggy issues, some may be with X.
Download/Purchase and install RH71. It was faster than endlessly playing
with RH70's X implementation and other assorted bugs. I have had only 1
minor issue with RH71, which was a kernel requirement to "make mrproper"
before I could compile modules, but that has nothing to do with X. X would
not work with my system (GeForce2 MX & Acer 99sl monitor) with RH70, but
worked just fine with RH71.

Thanks Ray,

I have used RH5.1, 6.1 and I am using now RH 6.2 and never had a problem
configuring X. I am also playing with Slackware 7.1 and had no problem
either. (I fact I am now in Slackware since my ISP changed some systems
beginning July 1st after which I could not log-on anymore in RH6.2.)
With all these distros I never changed any hardware. It is only now with
RH7.0 that I have the problem with X. I think the RH7.0 distro is at
fault.
I will give some details as you requested

In RH6.2, version 3.3.2-11. There is no X11R6 rpm file in RH 7.0

I have installed SVGA16-3.3.6-20 in RH6.2 and in RH 7.0 version 3.3.6-33

Diamond Stealth Video 2500

Sampo AlphaScan 411, vscan 50-120, hscan 30-50

It will only work using XF86Setup-3.3.6-20 and not using Xconfigurator

It has no effect using Xconfigurator

I am not on LAN

I have not tried those connections and can't kill startx since machine
freezes including ctrl+alt+ del entering startx and i have to press
reboot. When hang in Xconfigurator ctrl+alt+del works.
After I copied the configuratios for the video of XF86config from RH6.2 to
RH 7.0 I entered startx and got the total freeze.

I will not startx anymore since it freezes the machine

Confirmed above and the version is 3.3.2-11 and I am using Helix-Gnome in
RH6.2. There is no X11R6 file in the RH7.0 CDrom

Peter -- I'm replying only because this message is fairly old and I saw no
other replies. Given the large number of choices available for an X setup, I
very much doubt that you really tried "all possible configurations". If you
really did try *everything* and found that "none will work", what
suggestions do you expect?

Especially when you've told us NO details about what you are trying,
including such frills as

what version of X11R6 you are using
what X servers you tried (especially, will VGA16 work?)
what video card you are using (or what mobo, if it has
onboard video)
what monitor you are using (or the vscan and hscan rates
it supports)
whether you can switch from the failed X console to a
regular vt with CTRL-ALT-F1 thru F6 (or however
many vts your system has)
whether shifting among allowable modes (CTRL-ALT-+, I think)
has any effect
if the system is on a LAN, whether you can connect to it
via telnet or ssh (assuming you run either service)
after the problem starts. Or if you can access any
other TCP or UDP services that the system runs (even
if you can just ping it).
if you can connect via ssh, telnet, or a vt, whether killing
the startx process gets rid of the problem.

It would also help you (and perhaps us) if you directed the stderr output of
startx to a file, so you could see what if anything startx actually reports.

Your message seems to imply that the same hardware worked fine under RH 6.2.
It would help if you confirmed that, as well as telling us what version of
X11R6, and what X server, you were running with RH6.2.

I'm not the best person here to help troubleshoot X, even with all this
information available. But no one will be able to offer much help without it.
