My briggs&stratton ohv 17 hp electric starter will not turn over

My electric starter will not rotate engine until I rotate the engine past the compression stroke manually. What do I do to fix it?

    I have replaced the battery and I have jumped from my car battery-- and it makes no difference-- it won't start unless i rotate engine by hand past the compression stroke. Then it usually will spin it and it starts. The mower is 2 years old and it runs fine-- but I never have adjustewd the valves--since my 12 year old Kohler has had no problems at all.

I worked at a tool rental center while attending college and encountered the problem that you are having many times. The problem was caused be a variety of issues however can be determined by checking the following:
Worn starter motor bearings that would be indicated by higher than normal amp draw. Check for hot starter motor or hot cables.
Weak battery. The battery should be removed and tested for free at auto parts store. The battery should be replace every season to extend the life of the starter motor.
Belts or hydraulic pump that is not fully releasing from engine pulley or output shaft. Remove the spark plugs from the engine and tune engine by hand, it should turn rather freely.
Finally, compression release feature of engine is not working properly. Check engine service manual for proper adjustment of valves so that compression release will work. Finally check oil level for over full. Too much oil will raise compression. Good luck with your problem and email for more info.

    Your car battery surely has enough amperage to smoke starter. Since you did not mention that starter is very hot after attempt start, then mower battery cables or starter solenoid could be faulty not allowing full power to reach starter. If starter is very hot, then it is dragging. If cables solinoid or connectors are hot, suspect weakness. Starter motor has permenent magnets bonded to inside of case. Sometimes the magnets will come loose and rub against the armature (will drag down the armature and get hot) Generally, there will be heat where there is restance. An amp gauge will reveal draw and compare this to manaul.

Had same problem, thought it was the battery, so i replaced it. Then I noticed a flash under the fender when I tried to start it with the new battery. Turned out to be a loose battery ground wire. Tightened it and now it cranks fine.

You may want to check to see if your battery has enough charge to it. If the battery isn't fully charged it won'be enough to make the starter spin fast enough to start the engine

Before you shell out a bunch of money for a starter, unless you are sure that is what's wrong, there are a few things to check out first:
1. Safety switches
2. Starting solinoid
3. Ignition switch
4. Battery
Those are for if you have no response whatsoever. If it turns, but barely, check the following:
4. Battery (could have one bad cell and still hold some voltage, try jumpstarting the motor)
5. For over head valve (OHV) engines, adjust the intake and exhaust valves.

When the float in the carb sticks, it allows fuel to drain into the cylinder, that runs pass the rings into the crankcase. When the crankcase is full the pistons cannot go down, and the starter won't turn the engine. Drain all the oil gas mixture, and refill with proper oil. Replace float, needle and seat in the carb bowl. Throughly clean fuel passages, and bowl. If motor won't turn, remove spark plug and turn over engine a few times to remove gas oil mixture from the cylinder too.
