Question about Moen Castleby Two-Handle Widespread Roman Tub Faucet ....

Moen Castleby T6988 Roman Tub Faucet

I have all the parts but do not understand how the handle comes off.  It seems to screw onto a threaded rod and I am afraid to twist hard on it fearing that I will break other parts.  The diagrams show just a screw holding on the handle but when I take of the cap there is no screw.  The handle currently turns beyond 180 degrees on the hot water side.  I have all new parts from moen:  stem extension, escutcheon adjuster, cartridge retainer nut and a #1248 cartridge

There is no way this handle is coming off with a rocking and pulling motion.  I tried.  It looks like machine threads going down about 3/8" with a steel rod in the middle of the hole at the bottom of the threads.

The bell shaped spacer below the handle actually screws off.  The handle does not come off.  It is all one unit.

With screw removed (the missing one), handle should lift straight up. may need to rock the handle while lifting.

I believe what you are seeing is the threads that the missing screw would thread into. You state you have a stem extension, look at the top of it, Is that what you see when you look in the handle? If so, once the screw is removed (the missing one), the handle should lift off. On stubborn handles, I apply down force to the handle at the furthermost point of the handle from the stem, causing it to slightly tilt, I then place a solid object (wrench handle, screw driver shaft, etc) under the handle opposite of where I am applying down force, Then I lift the portion of the handle I was pushing down on, using the wrench, etc as a fulcrum to give me greater torque to remove the handle

Set screw is stuck. Any suggestions on how to remove it to replace the roman tub faucet?

to replace the roman tub faucet you have to expose the faucet under the deck of the tub. Most of the time builders do not install a door to do repairs. So expose the underside of the deck of the tub, turn off the main water outside then cut the water pipe for the hot and cold water with a tube cutter. At this point take a sawall and place the blade so the side of the blade touches the bottom side of the deck.
and cut all the way though the body of the stem.

Do all three and your done with the hard part. Install your new faucet and enjoy.

Hope I was help to you Rich

Valve inside faucet body pops up and shuts off water. Can take off cap and push valve down and resume until it does this again. A fix?

Most of the time this is an o-ring problem. Either the o-ring is worn out or has been replaced by the wrong size o-ring.

I have no water coming from the HOT knob. COLD works fine. How do I access the water line under the tub, so I can turn on the HOT water supply to that knob. It's on a roman tub, but there is no access to...

Cut a hole in the sheetrock on the adjoining wall closest to the faucet and turn on the hot water supply. Then u will have to screw the piece of sheetrock back in and tape and spackle. then paint of course. My husband who is a plumber says there should ALWAYS be an access panel for a roman tub!!! if they didn't put one then u have to make one. u can buy one at a plumbing supply store to put in once u cut the whole. then u would have one for any future problems.
