Shut Down Problem & Have to Reset Computer Battery

I have 2 dell inspiron 5100's and they have the same problems. (1) they won't always shut down--They computer beeps, and I have to hold the power button down for several seconds to shut down. (2) Occasionally (too often) they try to shut down, there is a single beep, and then I get the blue Dell screen and it freezes there. I was told by a Dell tech to reset the battery. That works, but I would like a real solution.

Hi, I had the same problem, for a workaround this is what I did. I made a new shutdown shortcut. Now when I click on it the pc shutsdown fine. I actually put mine on the taskbar. Here's how I did it...

XP Users:
1. Right click the Desktop and select New /Shortcut.
2. A screen will appear asking you for a Command Line. Here's what you put in that box:
For Shutdown:
Shutdown -s -t 0

For Restart:
Shutdown -r -t 0

For Log Off:
Shutdown -l -t 0

After you've decided which of the above options to use, click the Next button and give the shortcut an appropriate name.
Final Notes:
1. Now that you have the nifty little shutdown shortcut on your desktop, you may want to drag it to your taskbar for easier access (and less chance of accidental clickage).
2. I didn't like the nasty looking icon that XP gave my shortcut (it was too Win3.1 for my taste), so I changed it.

If this helps you plz rate this 'fixya'. If not leave a comment & I'll be happy to try to help you further. Thank you kindly.

Starts with disk drive 0 seek failure. hit f1to continue then blue screen with stop: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0X83AF9630, 0X8A6BC7B4, 0X8A6BC4B0) appears. Any help?

I have had this problem and had to reset the CMOS. Simply removing the CMOS battery is not always enough. Shut off your computer and disconnect the power. Then find the CMOS jumper, usually near the battery, and remove it, taking careful note of the pins it connected. Move it to the far pins and wait a few minutes. Then move it back to its original position, plug your computer back in and restart it. You may need your Windows disk to get everything working properly again.

hi, you must have enabled power saving options. Thats why your monitor shut down. you can disable, just do the same:

1.Right click on desktop
2.Select properties.
3.Select "ScreenSaver".
4.Select "Power" under Monitor power option.
5.There select "never" from Turn off monitor (drop down menu).

Now your monitor will not turn off automatically.

Dell Dimension 5100 power up problem

I had same issue with dimension 5100 Desktop. I work at Circuit City as the Lead Technician. I found that swapping the power supply did fix the problem! When i initially tested the power supply with a standard power supply tester, the power supply appeared normal. But after swapping the PC works great. Thx for the good idea!

Inspiron 530S won't turn off

The one method that will always work to shut down a frozen computer is to hold down the power button on the front of the computer until it turns off. When you turn it back on, it will give you an option of different startup modes, and unless it really is a serious problem, you can just go with "start Windows normally".
