Muffled sound from rear speakers why watching TV

I have an Onkyo TX-SR506 AV reciever connected to a Sony bravia TV and a Sony blu-ray DVD. The surround sound is excellent when playing a DVD, but when watching TV only the rear speakers produce a muffled & squeeky sound. I have connected the TV to the AV using a HDMI & Digital optical leads and the Blu-Ray to TV using HDMI & Digital Coaxial leads.

Thanks I will give this a try, but I thought the HDMI cables were only for video as my Onkyo is only a pass-through system.

Same issue:  I am using the surrounds as a second set of stereo speakers for music and the range is very limited--they seem to cut out all frequencies for voices.  The result is very muffled sounding.  I tested the speakers on the front channel and they work fine so it is clearly the receiver that is outputting reduced frequencies.  I've tried a number of output modes with no fix.  Any thoughts?

Make sure when you're watching tv, you set the receiver to all channel stereo listening mode.

Switch the HDMI cables around to make sure its not one of them, if the problem is one of them it will move with the cable,if no change i would suspect the coaxial cable next.

My Onkyo TX-SR506 plays cable and CD inputs to zone 2, but DVD won't play. Everything is connected according to the manual and I assigned zone 2 output correctly. What gives?

How are your cable and cd inputs hooked up? Analog connections? Alot of receivers cannot send an audio signal from hdmi inputs to zone 2.

I have four Bose 161 speakers and an Acoutismass 5 bass unit (original cubes are bad and replaced with the 161s). My Onkyo receiver started turning off and going into protect mode recently. Bought new...

you're going to need a ohm meter (good electrical testers have them) and make sure ohm ratings from speakers match the ratings for your receivers. Sounds like to much resistance for receiver(s)

I need to know if it is possibly to plug an iPod into my ONKYO AV RECEIVER TX-SR506?

Yes it is. The easiest way to go about this is to get a stereo mini male to left and right male rca cable. Connect the stereo mini end into your ipod, and the left and right male RCA end into an available input on your reciever. Change the input on the reciever to correspond with the input you connected to. Ensure your ipod is powered on and playing with the volume turned up. This set up will play through your reciever but will not charge your ipod. If you want it to charge while playing, than you will need to get a dock.

I have an audio problem with my TX-SR502.

If your remote also controls the Cable Box you might want to look at its audio settings. Maybe you muted it.

BTW: it would be a good idea to also run video and analog audio from the cable box directly to the TV if it has speakers so you can watch and listen independent of the Onkyo.

If your using compsite cables, Yellow , Red and White cables the red and white is sound you connect to reciever, then yellow to the coposite in on the Tv Screen. If it is a HDMI cable connect to Tv Screen not Reciever. What cables are you using?

It sounds like you have a defective unit. I would contact the manufacturer and ask to RMA it.

Subtitle Problem: Onkyo TX-sr605

The only remote that will definitely turn the sat subtitles on/off is the sat remote. The other subtitle buttons on the other remotes refer to the DVD subtitles and the subtitles generated by the tuner in the tv. The subtitle option is greyed out on the tv because you are not on the tv tuner.
