You can try to implement what media players do, prevent the device from sleeping, then only shut the display off. p.s. Only Wifi is shut off on sleep, GPRS connection and non-file transfer bluetooth connections are kept on.

You likely can't. When you suspend, the radio is turned off. The OEM made that decision. The only way around it would be to never put the device into suspend mode. You might be able to hack something together that tries to emulate a timeout and then turns off just the backlight, but I'm not sure how you'd get it all working without being directly in the PM, battery and touch driver pipelines.
