Have you tried connecting it to another PC? There is no software necessary for basic music transfer....Player should be in "MSC" mode to copy / paste the Mp3 files into the music directory of the player. But if it's not charging either, there may be something else wrong?
you can get the user manual here:

How do i update my Archos 504?

How to install firmware ..?(update)

Step 1. Download the firmware to your computer-->click HERE to download the update file When you download the update file, your browser may warn you that the file 'could be harmful'. This is normal because browsers are not familiar with files that have a .AOS extension and suspect that they could be malicious. These files are not harmful to your computer.

Step 2. Turn on your ARCHOS device and connect it to your computer with the USB cable

Step 3. On the ARCHOS, choose to connect and wait a few seconds for your device to be detected by the computer

Step 4. Copy and paste the downloaded firmware (.AOS file) to the ARCHOS device.
  • Case 1: logo_firm_hdd.jpg Your ARCHOS is detected by your computer as a Hard Drive (E: for example) in Windows® Explorer. Paste the update file directly onto the ARCHOS hard drive icon.
  • Case 2: logo_firm_g4.jpg Your ARCHOS device is detected as a 'Mobile Device' in Windows® Explorer (not as a hard drive) and you see just two folders Data and Media when you open it. Paste the update file into the folder called Data.
  • Case 3: logo_firm_g4.jpg Your ARCHOS device is detected as a 'Mobile Device' in Windows® Explorer (not as a hard drive) and you see Internal Hard Drive when you open it. Open this Internal Hard Drive icon and you will see the various ARCHOS folders inside (Video, Music, etc.). Paste the update file into this area but be careful not to paste it into any of the folders there.
Step 5. Disconnect the Device
Unplug the USB cable (for 'Mobile Device' connections) or use the "safe disconnect" green arrow icon (for Hard drive connection) in the system tray before unplugging the USB cable.

Step 6. On your ARCHOS device, click on "Update Firmware"
Click on the "tab" button to show the settings screen. Select the "System" icon and then click on the "Update Firmware" button. For the ARCHOS 104, 202, & 204, go to the settings and open the icon "System" where you can find the Update Firmware button.

Its not showing up on my computer that it recognizes the walkman. and it wont charge

The problem is driver related unless you figure out that it is not a faulty data cable you have.

You can download driver for this device from here. Just choose which operating system you have. Once installed try connecting your device to your pc and see if detection started and see also if indication of charging is starting also.

If not, you can also inspect if your pc have detected this device as removable disk. Double click My Computer icon and see if the removable disk appear on the list. If not try some changing of setting to let your pc detect it. Follow these steps
1. Right click on My Computer and select properties.
2. Select Hardware tab and click Device Manager
3. Right click on Portable Audio and select update drivers
4. Cick nextand tick the option let me choose driver for this device
5. Next choose usb mass storage driver from two options then click next..

After this double click again the My Computer icon and see if the removable disk appears.

If after downloading the drivers and changing the setup did not help then my suggestion will be to check the data cable and the connection of it in the device. Replace the data cable.

I hope this answers helped you.

Speakers are the correct wattage. Speakers are attached to stereo correctly. Can't hear music from fm broadcast or from cd player. Is this easily fixed?

Many of the current stereos and receivers have a toggle switch for analog and digital sound input, and many of the devices that are coming out like HD FM, DVD, Blu-Ray players, some higher-end MP3 players...etc. can output in 5.1 or higher surround sound. In order to control the individual speakers in a system like that though they have to send the signal out in a form of data that has to be processed by the receiver before it can be sent to the speakers.

So all that being said if you have an analog (or normal) device plugged into a receiver but it's set to listen for a digital audio signal you won't hear any sound at all. It works the same way if you have a digital device hooked up to an analog input.

To fix this just look through the manual that came with the stereo and see if there's a way to make sure it's set correctly for the device. Some devices also have settings you can alter on them so that they can send analog or digital signals to the receiver. I would say to check into whichever part is newer, and easier to work with. Once you get them talking the same language you shouldn't have any problem with it.

Good luck!

Itunes+Windows XP not recognizing itouch

This is a pervasive issue, but seems to be centered around the usb controllers detection of yet another usb device. If you have other usb devices attached to the system, (aside from mouse and keyboard), try unplugging them and check the ipod. (This means printers, usb flash, micro cards, etc.) Use a rear port for the ipod if you have the option.
Check to make sure tht the apple mobile device support is installed. Look at the usb controllers in device manager to see if there are conflicts reported there. In fact, you can uninstall the usb controllers and reboot the system and they'll be reinstalled automatically.
If you really want to troubleshoot the usb situation, see articles here, here, here, & here.
If you'd rather read what has worked for some other users than chip away at the root cause, see here.
Finally, visit windows update and check for any hardware updates for your system. If the drivers are outdated, that could contribute to the problems...
Good luck with it. It can be a frustrating problem.

When i try to charge my player with help of usb it is detected by the system.why?

Because PnP (Plug and Play) BIOS of your system finds a new device attached to the system. Your system should detect it as an USB Drive when it will be connected to USB socket.

Windows does not detect device

your software may be setup for only one device and will only find the latest one. However, when you plug in the 512 model windows should still notify you that something has been attached to the usb port. If the device plays ok the batteries are probably ok and if so it's probably the connector or the cable unless you're using the same cable with both units. If the unit doesn't play it might be the batteries but even then windows should notify you when you connect the device if it's making a connection because the battery charger should start drawing current through the usb cable and windows should sense this. Mine stopped working when my grandson removed the cable while updating the firmware. Had to send it in to get the firmware rebooted

WMP won't detect my MP3

See if this helps: -Close all programmes on your computer. -Turn off your Sansa e250. -Attach the cable into the USB port of your computer before attaching it into the actual e250. -The scroll wheel on the Sansa should have turned on by now. -Then it's just a matter of waiting for a few seconds. -Try opening Windows Media Player to see if it detects your device. Otherwise, be patient. Goodluck.
