Minolta Lens Repair?

By Luisa_K - usenet poster

My Minolta "i" series 28-85 mm f3.5-4.5 lens is in need of repair.
A Minolta-recommended independent camera repair center in California
could not do it (their claim: Minolta does not sell spare parts).
Can anyone recommend a good (and hopefully well-stocked) repair outfit?

Please send your responses to my e-mail address ().

Assuming the 35-105 is a Minolta lens, hopfully you found an original
version, the later version mostly plastic inside and out was a
nightmare.

Regarding pricing, the newer 28-85 it lists for $539 in a May '99
price list I have. The 28-80 (mostly plastic, including the lens
mount) the latest version list for $289.00

The newer 28-85 construction is pretty close to the original internal
metal barrels, etc. With the cost of everthing now days I am not
surprised it cost more. Of course the 28-80 lenses are less expensive
due to their construction.

I don't recommend any of the 28-80 of which there at actually 2 main
versions. They are of mostly plastic barrels inside and out (2633)
version does have at least one metel internal metal barrel) including
the lens mount) The (2659) has all plastic barrels inside and out,
including the lens mount.

The thing with these 28-80 lenses is that if a plastic lens mount
breaks an ear, it is not just a simple matter of removing the broken
mount and slapping on a new one. The lens mount is only one end of a
part the extends up into the body of the lens.

These lenses are usually sold with low-end SLRs

If you want a lens that is like your original 28-85 Minolta lens get
the 28-85 (2586) a lot of the internal parts are so identical to the
original that if you laid the parts side by side you'd say the parts
are the same.

The numbers in parenthesis such as "2585" refer to the first 4 digits
of the product found on the bottom of the box the lens comes in when
purchased new, as well as in the product catalog/price lists.

Thanks. It is the original AF 28-85 mm with metal
outer casting. Another repair service confirmed
Minolta no longer supplies parts for this lens.
I found an old 35-105mm f3.5-4.5 at a store nearby.
I will use that one as a replacement in the short term
(I do have a 18-35mm). For the longer term, I am trying
to understand why Minolta's new 28-85 is so much more
expensive ($315 B&H) compared to my older 28-85 (about
$180 B&H in 1989) or Minolta's 28-80 ($110) or Sigma 28-80
($90) or Sigma 28-105 ($190).

Can you describe this lens a little more? Officially is no "i"
designated lenses. There have been "xi" lens and even a "pz" lens but
no "i" designated lenses.

I assume you are talking about an older 28-85 AF lens an lens of which
there are two. There was the original AF that came out when Minolta
introduced their AF SLRs. This lens is easier to spot because it is
obvious that most of the outer barrels are metal. This original 28-85
AF lens Minolta no longer services and no longer has major parts for.
If you have this lens depending on what the problem is it may be
difficult to get it repaired due to parts.

A few years after the above lens Minolta issued a lens very similar to
the lens above but with plastic outer barrels.
