If you use the small part of the "screwdriver" that came with the machine, it is what broke mine free. They are tough to get off but turn like the rest. Lefty Lucy Righty Tighty! :) Hope this helps you out!
Rewatch your dvd that came with your machine. If, you do not have that, read the manual. Sometimes you have the thread feeding the wrong way, make sure that it unwinds toward you. Also, check your needle, change if necessary. Make sure the flat side faces the rear of the machine and is inserted all the way up.
