Direct short recheck the wires at the starter to make sure you didn't pinch one and ground it out against the block

SOURCE: 1977 ford f 100 solenode mounted on starter

If memory serves me this truck comes with a starting system that incorporates an external solenoid mounted on the fender wall. The symptom you describe is related to either frozen contacts in the solenoid or the existing wiring is attached in correctly. The way the external solenoid wiring goes is as follows, positive battery cable to the solenoid (large, post doesn't matter either side) then the long large wire goes directly to the starter, this type of starter has only one large connection on it which accomodates the large wire from the said solenoid. There are two small wires some where in the vicinity of where the solenoid is mounted to the fender wall, the wires are identified by there special rubber capped shape one is black and one is red, the solenoid shoud have a + and - mark right on the cast to identify which post the wire slides onto. By your description the starter has asolenoid built onto it. Just run the single solenoid cable wire as I decribed to that starter and disconnect and tape the positive small wire going to the starter. Proceed to connect the two small wires that are located in the vicinity of the fender mounter solenoid to the solenoid as I decribed they should have a round rubber slide over type connector to accomodate the small solenoid posts. If this doesn't work you probably need to aquire a starter that is non solenoid intergrated starter, be sure the solenoid is good, that is the one mounted on the fender wall, the described solution should work if there is power to the positive small cap type red wire when the ignition key is activated to the start position, to check put a voltmeter on the wire while an assistant activates the key the volt meter should read 12- 14 volts only when the key is actived to start.

SOURCE: i left a ground wire off the alternator on my 93

Leaving a ground wire off would not do that, so I really dont know what you did??? But you will need to check the BIG fuses or fusible links at the positive cable or the under hood fuse box.

SOURCE: 2002 ford escort zx2 negative ground harness

I am about to have the same problem with my 2002 ZX2. My shop called the Ford dealer and they can replace it for $450.00...
seems like an awful lot for a battery cable.

SOURCE: battery positive lead shorted out on battery strap

What is your question?Seems you are are the right track to repairng the fried wires. Even if you do not get them exactly right right just make sure everything is grounded. The engine and battery need grounded tot he frame/firewall.

Trucks been rolled , now won't crank

Try this.
Take a positive battery jumper cable and hook it directly to the big lug terminal on the starter solenoid that the cable hooks to from the battery.
Take the negative jumper cable and hook it to a good steel, iron, or aluminum ground connection right by the starter, on the motor.
Now try the key to start it.
If it still says nothing, I'm thinking you have some wire harnesses unhooked from the rollover.
Someone really good could take a little jumper wire and connect the tiny terminal on the starter solenoid (which goes to the key switch), to the positive battery cable, and that should make the starter work, hopefully.
If it cranks with this direct application of power to the starter, be sure and check the "ground straps" between the motor and the frame. I think there are about 3 or 4.
Some may have snapped.
Be blessed.

Truck will not start how can i tell if its a starter or selonoid

does it spin real fast without clanging and grinding against the flywheel? if so then its probably the solenoid bad. do you have to hit the starter with a hammer then it works? it is probably bad brushes or a worn motor. eather way i think you can only get a new starter and solenoid together not sold seperate. check for bad battery cables (loose).

I'm trying to install a new battery in my 1984 Nissan Sentra. When I hook up the terminals, the wiring starts to smoke leading me to believe that the hook up is backwards. What is the correct hook up for...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly (Electrician since late 1960's)

Ground goes to the - pole. Hooking it up backwards can damage your alternator, wiring harnesses and fuse links. (Fuse link damage is a nightmare to sort out!) What you do by hooking up a battery backwards is turn your vehicle wiring harness into a giant heating element. (<-Very bad!) If you just changed the battery and then you hooked up the cables with the smoking cable result you certainly did connect the cables backwards. The ground cable... will connect to chassis and in most cases the engine body / transmission somewhere.
The positive cable will eventually connect to the starter. Follow the ground lead from the battery to the chassis or engine body connection. (metal to metal contact) Once your sure that is the ground cable; connect it to the - post of the battery AFTER connecting the positive post terminal.
If you have a newer audio system you will have lost your radio codes. We can not provide the codes for anti-theft reasons. Activation Codes must be from the car dealer or audio system retailer.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

When I try to start my '05 tribute it just clicks sporadically and the lights go crazy.

First check your battery connections. Take the cables off and clean them witha wire brush or sandpaper. Hook them back up and retry to start. If it starts fine if not check the battery itself. Check the ground cable at both ends. If still no start check the starter and the starter soldnoid.

Battery check ok only click when try to start cant even see the starter motor?

Clean both post and terminals by removing the terminals. the clicking sound, sound like not having a good ground or contact knowing the battery is good. I would also try to eliminate the battery and bad ground and starter, To see if your starter is good, go ahead and have someone jump your car by attaching the cable as Positive directly to your car Positive post and the Negative to your car good ground contact. do not hook it up to your car negative post. If the car start, than your starter is fine. If it doesn't start than you have a bad ground or weak battery. Replace battery or clean ground. If it does not turn your engine over than you have a bad starter. hope that help some.
